Well, I didnt cut off the fins yet, but I did route the coil cable internal!...it was a real B!....right there on the kitchen counter when the Wife went to the Piggley Wiggley for some reason...
..I was gonna take pictures of the whole operation, but I did not want to embarrass myself any more than necessary...amazingly I was successful in my endeavor...it turned out good, looks super sleek, and it works, which is the main thing....
The problem was the only soldering iron around here is a great big one the Wife uses for her stained glass..danged thing has a 1/2" blade....so a fellow had to be careful with those tiny wires...I of course tried to make my own out of a screwdriver and my propane torch, but failed miserably...So I winged it with that monstrous iron, managed to get them all strategically soldered back together, staggered the joints as is my custom, shrink tubed them all individually, used my wader silicone to slather the whole mess, then wrapped it with tin foil to block the EMI's, and then a couple wraps of black tape...you can imagine!
I first tried to unsolder those little wires up at the main fitting, but that big damned soldering iron was no good!...so I measured twice, took a deep breath, and cut the coil wire roughly in the middle somewhere, drilled out the holes in the shafts at the appropriate angle, strung the cable through, and then carefully stripped and soldered it back together...The splice is somewhere inside the shaft about halfway up....I also got rid of the camlocks, since I never adjust length anymore, I pop the whole works apart at the top knuckle and fold it in half for travel....now Brothers, let me warn you, this is not a thing to do if a fellow changes coils, and its probably not a thing to do in any regards!
I have got a ton of time on this original 11" dd, and figured if I really scroo the pooch, I'll buy another from one of y'all,...I am drinking now as you can imagine! Wheres that hacksaw blade? I bet I can lose another few grams getting rid of those fins!
