C$ averaging...

Mark in NC

Member
I've ran the C$ with averaging on, and with averaging off quite a bit. It may just be me, but I haven't really been able to see any difference. Have any of you folks observed a noticeable change when running either way?.. My thoughts would be that it's designed to "stabilize" the ID on multiple sweeps, but how fast does it reset?

Thanks,

Mark in NC

I really didn't wanna tackle that one 'cause I never use averaging hardly at all.....it may be good in some area's though for certain things

I know it's an important enough feature that it was put there, so I really wanted to have a better understanding of it's function. Mr. Bill, if I understand what you're saying correctly, the sampling is actually multiple times in a single "sweep" of the coil, versus adding up and dividing multiple sweeps? (I know the speed of the C$ is incredible, which shows up in its ability to "see" multiple targets that are really close together, but not mask) . The reason I'm so interested in this is that very few folks seem to use it, but I know Fisher had something important in mind if they went to all the trouble of putting it in as a function. I'm hoping if my little pea brain can understand it better, I may begin to "see" where it would come in handy...

Thanks,

And happy Friday to all (and St. Paddy's day!)

handy in very mineralized soil to add stability to the ID. :|

Happy Averaging,

If you think about your coil sweep, as you approach the target, the machine is sampling and reporting the begining, then over, then passing off the end. So you can see several numbers for a target. If you sweep too slow, these changing numbers can confuse you. Thats one reason a faster sweep is better with the CS. Averaging takes these three ranges and gives a good lock on number depending on how centered over the target you are.

You can sweep slower with averaging on and still get good id locks. You have to sweep faster with averaging off to achieve the same id lock on.

Thanks to the 3 Bills and Mike :) I'm going to do a little experimentation with some close targets (and deep) and see what happens. I have a lot of variety in my local soils ranging from mild to flat out ugly. (weekend project!)

And didn't even know it, somewhere along the line it got set on averaging, and i never checked it, guess i got used to it, shucks i got along just fine, i re-set it yesterday, now i spose i'll have to get used to that, whatever it's set on, it works real good, ya'd think after 3 C$ years i'd b smarter'n that DUH, DUH:crazy::crazy::crazy::detecting::detecting::usmc::usaflag:

But I agree 100%....it's a feature the engineer/FRL was important enough to include, but I think you hit the nail on the head: that if a casual user don't see much difference they tend to leave it off :nerd: I remember asking one of the engineers about averaging when it was 1st released & remember being told then about that word I over-use now "real time". ;) I was told ave. off keep's it in real time & "what you see is what ya get" were the exact words I remember......so since then I ran ave off & learned that way. Maybe a newbie should run Ave. ON if they feel they see to many numbers fast flashing numbers??........PLUS as M. Hillis said, maybe a slow sweeping CZ user should use Ave on too. I tend to sweep kinda fast so I've done OK with ave off thusfar......
Great thread...

to run Ave. ON in the nasty red clay of the DIV hunt....
I'll report back what happens
