Buying used off eBay

What are your thoughts? Has anyone purchased a used digi SLR off eBay? Because I really can't afford to purchase a new SLR, I am looking at used Nikon D1 Pros's, Canon 300D's and Fuji S1 Pro's or S7000. I am not sure how much a camera can be used before it starts to fail.

Be very careful with the first D1's from Nikon.
They had terrible magenta cast to them.
note: Nikon is coming out with 2 new models geared for the consumer. The D50 and the D70s
News of these models slipped out onto the internet this past week on Nikon Japanese website.

Also the Fuji S1 had a mechanical problem with the the lens coupling switch on the camera body.
I had one of these cameras and mine broke at that exact point.
Nice camera and produced great skin tones.

IF you really like the hobby you should try and get a SLR. I had the Fuji S7000 and liked it at the time I had it. Excellent for macro but since I bought the D70 it would be very hard to go back. The D50 that RM mentioned will probably be a nice camera for the money. The fuji S1 seems to be a nice camera but would it cost that much more for the D50 when it comes out? Another camera I have been impressed with is the the Fuji 5100. Not bad for the money.Excellent zoom and as far as I'm concerned it takes as good a picture as the S7000 which probably will be replaced soon.

Thank you guys..RM you must a pro photographer because I see you have D2X, one hell of a camera, wow. Thanks for the info, I don't want anything to do with any cameras that had issues. Its one thing to buy new and have issues but to buy a 4-6 year old camera that has issues means I will have to fit the bill and thats money down the drain.
If a deal comes by I can't resist than I'll buy but I will keep my ears open for these new models coming, never heard of them.
Thank you Tom and RM. It's your pictures that have inspired me to get into amateur photography. I will continue to learn the concepts on my Kodak 4800.
Next step SLR.

I just noticed the but the S7000 does not have much flexibility as far as lenses go. Looks nice though.

So would you consider the Fuji S1 Pro to be a better choice over the Nikon D1? I just picked up a digital photo magazine and just realized that just because these older pro models have a lower pixel number its the CCD or imager size that's most important, didn't know that. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
