I'm done thinking about it.
I want the GT but what meter shoud I get and what is the best coil for it.I want to hunt the fresh water beach.
I might just get the new Gt with the stock coil but I know there are a couple of different meters for it.
thanks
If I can't get everything right away I will get them eventually

I use the "Ron's 180 meter". It works extremely well for me As with the GT one Must Keep It Dry. I put a ziplock bag over mine. It is also much cheaper to purchase than the older no longer made meters. And no one else that I know of currently puts out a meter for the GT. Ron is the Moderator for this forum. The Gt is a great machine but it does take a bit of time to learn. I liked mine so well that I purchased a second one to have as a backup just in case. There are a variety of coils available to the GT. I like the SEF 10X12, The standard 10" Tornado is definitely no slouch and many folks will tell you that it works just as well or better than the other available coils. The 8" and 5" coils also are useful in trashy situations. I frequently use the 8" coil in areas where EMI is a problem. The Detech 13" coils is also a very good coil and gives a lot of coverage. Before purchasing an Excal for use at the beach the 13" coil was my go to coil due to the depth I was getting and the coverage area. I believe that it is only water resistant and not water Proof.

Patience, good headphones and a scoop... take your time to learn the machine..it is an easy unit to operate but most people go thru a learning curve prior to becoming proficient. .. i use to use cheap headphones with mine and now use a pair of grey ghost which has been a great improvment ... i have a meter but dont use it as i personally prefer not to.. once you get the hang of it you can expect to dig some really deep signals... good luck...

I agree Patience is the most important and if you take time to learn you will like the Sovereign. The Sovereign will give you a very good idea what's in the ground with the nulls and tone changes.Concentrate on field use don't get caught up in air test. The Sovereign comes with a great coil the 10 inch Tornado.A eight inch coil will help you to learn quicker and a 180 meter.Bad news there are a lot of new users who get a Sovereign and are disappointed from lack of understanding this detector. Before investing in a lot of coils and accessories use the Sovereign for a while just in case the Sovereign isn't for you. Good Luck

Yes, get Ron's meter! As you get the hang of the GT you might decide to use/not use it. But, in the beginning it was the only thing, (for me) that finally made things, "come together". Good luck.

When I purchased my GT a little over two years ago I could not understand what the machine was telling me. I became quite frustrated with it and was wondering if I had wasted my money.

I got a meter from Ron and that started me on the proper track to learn the machine. After over two years I think I am still learning as the machine surprises me from time to time. As I learn the machine I keep finding deeper and deeper targets. Go slow and listed for those high tones.

The Sovereign series are outstanding detectors. I sometimes did coins that I wonder if I am ever going to get down deep enough to retrieve them. While they may not be the deepest detector made they will definitely go very deep.

Given the opportunity the Gt will pay for itself in clad coins and of course they will give you such a beautiful high tone on a silver coin that it will stop you in your tracks.

Do not give up on a piece of property if you think that there might be silver in the dirt. I worked two pieces of property (City park and adjacent abandoned National Guard Armory) and did not find a single silver coin. After waiting about a year I went back and over the next few visits I was able to find 9 silver coins that I had missed in my first covering the property. Had to get rid of all that clad in order to hear the weaker targets.

Good Luck

Ron,
You are right on and everything I would have said also with a lot less words. In fact there is a lot of great info and honest info in this tread by everyone.
The Sovereigns are one great detector as those that spend the time and have the patience will tell you and to me I feel you should have a 10 inch Tornado coil that come with a GT and a 8 inch maybe to help learn this detector along with a 180 meter to help with the learning the tone. The one other item I swear by, but is not made anymore is the S-1 Probe of Sun Rays, but once in a while you see a nice used one for sale.
Starting with and to get to understand it more I feel maybe a newer area where more new coins are lost to help understand the good and bad targets and how the pinpointing works. Some will go to the well worked areas and get disgusted as they don't find much as they don't know what to listen for for those deep signals or swing the coil to fast for the Sovereign to see the good ones.

Good Luck and remember to have patience and you will be rewarded with some great finds.

Rick

You got to get rid of the clad in order to listen close to those weaker signals of the deeper coins. I just love those old places where I am told it has been hunted to death and I wont find much, I tell them great to hear as now I can get the good stuff with my Sovereign as all the trash and new stuff is out of the way.
The more you use the Sovereigns the more you will learn about it and the more this detector will impress you.

Good Luck
Rick

thanks_ I will remember that.

I've seen that meter for sale lately but can't think of where I saw it.
I'll keep an eye out for it.
thanks

I have the time and a ton of other detectors that I bought and sold. This one will take some learning time but that is what I think will be interesting about it.
thankyou

IS the standard coil water proof? I can hunt a wet beach or can't I?
I will look it up
thanks

Yes the Minelab coils for the Sovereign Gt are waterproof. as are the Coiltek, DEtech, SEF and Sunray coils.
