buying an explorer

I am considering purchasing an explorer xs, but i was wondering how does the target id show coins? by number or some other sort of scale. also, how good is the preset program you get when you hold the power button? thanks for your help.

You can choose how the target ID shows coins. The digital screen gives you a number & a drawing (icon), or you can use the "Smart screen" & you get crosshairs in upper right corner for copper, clad & silver. Zinc cents ID somewhat more to the left & nickels down near the bottom of the screen, with the zinc cent & nickel areas being just to the right of the iron area. THe preset program is OK except you will want to adjust the sensitivity to the highest number that is stable. Also I think the preset is iron disced out & everything else accepted, you might want to accept some iron or put in more disc. HH, George (MN)

To toggle between ONLY the Smartfind and Digital screens without having to A: go do it from the menu, or B: push the "Detect" button 3 times to forward to Smartfind again. Like Jeff said, the numerical scale on the Digital screen only goes to 32 unlike a lot of other machines with a numerical display, and I feel that's way too coarse. I find it handy though when trying to determine a nickel from a pulltab. That's about all I use it for. All that aside, I'd highly recommend an Explorer to anyone who has a some detecting under their belt and has the time to really learn it.

Once you've done your set up in the advanced mode switch back to the quick start menu. Your custom pattern will follow as well as the setting. You just can't change the advanced options without going back into the mode.
I have also stuck two small clear self adhesive furnature bumpers to the clear optional cover face over the pin-point and detect buttons. This way you can find them by touch and they are easier to push.
