Buying a smaller search coil

Treasure Hawk

New member
Hey guys. I am getting ready to order a new search coil for the AT Pro. The only coil I have right now is the 8.5 x 11 DD that came with it. I want to get a smaller coil for some of the more trashy areas I have been hunting in. I am trying to decide between the 6.5 x 9 concentric, 5x8 DD, and 4.5 super sniper.
I would like to hear your opinions on each. I'm not sure if it should affect my decision but I live on Kitsap Peninsula of Washington State.

get the 5x8....that little coil is awesome in trashy areas. Actually, that little coil is just awesome and it stays on my pro 90% of the time.

I agree with SavingThePast. Get the 5x8 DD coil..you probably won't ever take it off again. My opinion stay away from the concentric and sniper. DD is the way to go

I like the 5 x 8 DD Coil. One of these days I am going to try the 6.5 x 9 concentric coil and do some comparison data with other coils.

Well it looks like everyone likes the 5x8 DD. That will probably be my choice. Hopefully I can get that ordered soon. Thanks for your input!

I got my Pro in January of 2013, and had done a lot of research on it. I bought the 5X8 coil and a lower rod setup, to make swapping them out in the back of my car easier/faster. I had read from many that once they put the 5X8 on, it didn't come off. At the end of April in 2013, I put the 5X8 on, and it hasn't come off yet, found my first two gold rings with that setup. Now probably most of my MD'ing is at a saltwater beach with a brand M detector, but I have just this winter gotten some nice fields/woods to hunt, so my main emphasis may very well be with the Pro this season. For such larger areas, and hopefully with a low trash ratio, I will probably go with the stock coil, for the bigger footprint. Good luck, Artie

5x8 goes almost as deep based on everyone's posts of finds when it started to come on the market as the larger 8.5x11 does and the smaller is lighter so the machine doesn't feel tip heavy any more and you can swing it all day long.
