Button?

I'm new here and to MDing, so bear with me. This was my first ever find. I assume it's a button. It's approx the size of a quarter. Any other ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Found it with my MX5

The size and color of it makes me think it may be a broach from long ago.

Any Suggestion on what to use to soak it in to clean it and remove some scaling?

I think it is a bit too small for a broach, I would think maybe an old two part coat button.......

I don't know if I would even try to soak it in anything. It looks from the photo that the back
side is in very bad condition. I would seriously leave it as is but I don't know the thickness.
If it's thick enough, you may want to gently take something and try to pull some of the rust
out of the back but again, if it is thin, it probably will pull all the way through leaving a hole.

How much does it weigh. Appears to be thin.......very light weight ?

It's heavy. It's bronze and after cleaning, there is definitely a place where a hinge was and a little outcropping where a finger could get behind and unhook it. It's definitely a part of a locket.

Sounds like you have gotten to the bottom of it. Maybe a picture, front & back, now that you've cleaned it up ............ ?

If it's hinged it could also be the lid to an inkwell.
