I found this button yesterday in a school yard and was wondering if anyone knew what kind it might be, from the writing on the front it appears to be some type of military button but not sure why one would be where I found it, also there is no writing on the back at all. Thanks for your help. Jimmie

US Naval Academy? Might be a place to start a search....

This is a U.S. National Army collar disk that was made only from 1915-1917. The National Army was a branch created in 1915, but was eliminated in 1918. The style of disk you have was discontinued in 1917. That's great that you found a relic that can be dated exactly to WWI.

Wow thanks for the info, my first military button I'm so happy :detecting:

You asked what a military button might have been doing in a school yard. I think kids find these things around the house and take them to school to show their buddies. I know I've done the same thing when I was a kid with some of my dad's old coins. I was lucky enough not to have lost them.

cool la! sometimes they used school yards for parade grounds and to practice drills. local highschool was army affiliated and they had a lot of real army guys in and out. thats just better than a coin any day!

Thanks everyone, I'm hoping to go back over the area just as soon as it stops raining and the ground dries out a little bit. The place I'm hunting looks like it was the side yard to a house that has been turned into a play ground for pre-k or kindergarden kids, (its not really part of the school ground but in front of the school next to the road) lots of just under the surface trash, large and small nails broken pieces of brick etc so i guess its possible there was a building there at one time that was torn down. Guess I'll just have to make myself use the 5.75 coil on the cibola and make sure I stand a better chance of finding something that may be masked by some of the trash.
