Hi guys,

I hunted a friends ranch yesterday. His family homesteaded the ranch back in the mid 1800s. There was a CC camp on his property back in the day. I found this button along with a couple others but this one here I can not figure out where it came from. I have been able to translate the writing but do not know where the button is from. I know the USMC used a metal clasp on their belts during WWI with the same phrase but I'm not sure if this is also USMC or not. If any one knows anything at all about this button please let me know.

The button reads - "Docendo Discimus Exnihilo Nihil Fit" which translated means: "We learn by teaching. Out of nothing comes nothing."

Thanks guys and take care

Danny

Interesting button--the front sure preserved well. Sorry I can't help ID it, but I'm sure someone else on here or the "Whatzit" forum might be able to help. Good luck.

Really cool button Danny !

Theres a few good web sites and books out there on vintage button collecting - maybe try your local library - see if they can get a book in from one of the other branches - or look on Amazon or eBay ?
Also, I've been able to find out about a lot of the misc. items that I've dug by searching in Google "Images" - rather than the Google - "Web Search"
Try typing a few of the key words on the button - and the actual word Button in Google Images and see if it brings you to a web site that can tell you more about it.

Good Luck ! --- Mark

Thanks, Claditator! I think I will check out the Whatzit forum.

Ive found a very similar button in my mom's collection. I was wondering if you had found any more information on it? Sorry about the resolution in the pic I don't have access to a good camera...

I found one today too!!!

Lots of buttons found but not much info other than the latin saying. Seems to be turn of the century WW1 era. I found mine outside a defunct Catholic run High School that closed in 1968, six inches off the sidewalk about 5 inches down. There is a larger version that apperars with tabs to fasten to a belt, same latin saying. It was certainly popular at the time.
