Button with Eagle and Sterling Thimble

banditicey

New member
We went out for several hours tonight after a early dinner

We are having Amazing Weather and it has been in the 80's the past few days

Went to a local Park and found few coins between the two of us but each of us had a Keeper

I found a Button with a Eagle on it that appears rather Old

Brian found a Beautifully Decorated Thimble that was heavy and had Initials inside at the head
and also etched below the initials was STERLING

You can imagine how exciting it was for both of us

Any information on the Items are Appreciated and Thank You For Viewing

Nice finds Eva, the button is definitely a Navy button but that is all I know. Congrats on the finds and taking advantage of the nice weather.

Wow! I really like both those finds. Great job guys and congratulations on 'em! Thanks for the pictures.

Congrats Eva! I would say your button is a US Navy coat button from the WW II (or a few years after) era.

Good finds, A 1930's coat button.

great silver thimble! I found a button with a very similar design last yr, here is mine

Your Button looks similar but not the same

Possibly because it is in Great Shape and really clear

Do you know the word on the rolled up item held by the eagle?

Thanks

no actually I did not know that was a word...I looked at it again and it just looks like a design to me, can you make out letters?

Looks like "JANO...possibly P

But I am going to look in some button books and get back to you

There are so many Military Buttons and sometimes the most subtle change could make it Really Special

I find doing research on the Finds to be enjoyable and then i get excited again about the Find

Regards and HH

Here is Information about the Silver Thimble Manufacturer

This particular Design of the Sterling Thimble came into existence in the 1880's

Hi Eva

I found a button that is very similar to the one that you found, not sure if it's the same one. Based on my research, it was made by the "Horstmann Bros & Allien" company for the Union Troops during the Civil War. Horstmann Bros & Allien made buttons between 1852 and 1877. I'm still trying to find out what part of the uniform the button is from and whether it is an enlisted man's button or an officer. I've attached some pics of mine. I do not have a camera that takes micro pictures, I used my scanner, so I apologize for the quality of the pics.

Very nice finds Eva, very neat button and a really nice thimble. A silver thimble is still on my want list. Let us know if you find out more about the button.

Thank You Steve for the information and your efforts with the Photo's

The back of my Button is destroyed but it would be WILD if it was from the Civil War!

We have found 1812 and Civil War items in these parts and I will now do my research and let you all know what I find out

Best Regards,
Eva
