Did Waterbury button comany make buttons for the confederate army? today my son and I were out coin hunting near Reading Pa and I dug up a button with the letter I on it,, with waterbury company stamped on the back,, looking at there web site I found the same button, saying it was a confederate officiers button (Infranty), but just dont now if waterbury did make Reb buttons during the war

Coin, there are no war-time Waterbury Confederate government buttons (staff, I, C, E, R, etc). To do so would have been considered a big no no, consorting with the enemy.

If you have a Block I, Script I, etc with a Waterbury backmark, it could very well be a button from the 1960s when reenacting became popular during the centennial. There were re-strikes during this time.

If the I is inside the shield of an eagle, then you'd have an eagle I used by Union troops.

Just a side note, there is a school of thought that Scovills and others did produce buttons for Southern troops during the war years. These buttons had blank backs or other non-identifying marks.

Can you post a picture? Wish I had better news. Keep swinging!

Richard

Thanks Richard,, after doing some more research on the subject I did find that Waterbury did:nt make button for the CSA,,, what I found is no doubt a knockoff for re enactments,,, but it was cooll to find and to think it might be real,,,I;ll post a pic later on today,,, but the 1820 large cent I found is definately real :bouncy:

An 1820 Large Cent? Yeah, we'd all like to see that one! Love those coins. Congrats.

Wish I had better news on the button. But keep swinging 'em, it'll happen.

Look forward to the LC. I got an 1832 earlier this spring but that's the only one I've found this year.

Congrats again!

Richard
