Found this large coat size button this weekend. I believe it to be President Zackery Taylor, because on it says Rough and Ready. I have not cleaned it yet. Shank is in tack. If it is of value should I clean? There is patina under dirt.

PC 221 in the Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert, relative value listed is $35 in 1997.
It is worth much more than that to you, of course. If I was you, I would clean it with water and dish washing liquid only, possibly with a toothbrush. DON'T clean with silver polish.
 
Thanks Carolina Phil for the Info. Need to purchase a good button reference book. Trying to decide on which, Tice's or Albert's.
