Button Identification Help

Hello folks. I just joined and was looking for some help in identifying this button I recently found (my first button find!)........... 13 star border with left facing eagle
It was found at an old Virginia plantation house that at one time (1840's-1860's or so) frequently hosted high level state dignitaries, military officers and local officials.
There are no markings on the back and the shank moves. Seems to be about 23 mm in diameter. Thanks

I found the same exact button a few years back and was told it is relatively modern... the dead give away is a lack of a manufacturers mark on the reverse side... i was told 1950s coat button... hopefully someone with more information will chime in ...

I have to agree, the front is great, but the construction of the back, the loop, points to a more modern blazer button. Just for fun, google Confederate droop wing button, but I do believe you have one here. Looking forward to more opinions.

Thanks guys for your input. I was sure hoping it was much older than the 50's. Several folks thought perhaps it was a Confederate Staff button but could not offer more than that. I did find a link on Confederate Uniform requirements and it looks like they were interpreted pretty loosely even to the point that they used whatever they had including Union pieces of clothing and insignia......... here's one link I came upon .... http://26nc.org/blog/?p=631. With respect to buttons they just indicated "Buttons were to be of “bright gilt’ with a raised eagle in the center, surrounded by stars."

I came across another link which I cannot locate at this time, but it indicated that early on buttons were imported and typically had the makers mark in the back. As the war progressed Confederate resources were slim and buttons (as well as other accoutrements/uniforms) were frequently locally made and in the case of buttons usually bore no markings on the back at that time.

Thanks again and take care. If I come across anything else that helps identify it / price it I will add it here.
