Button ID help

Looks like a coat button. Maybe general service. Gold guilted, 13 stars above eagles head, any ideas??

No, they did not receive earlier use. Its not uncommon though to find them in War Between the States Sites and old house sites mixed in with the older items. I have been fooled more than one time when I first see them coming out of the ground, because they have a low convex like many Confederate buttons. Sorry, it can be a bummer I know. But they are still a neat military item. Goggle: Great Seal Button...and you can get a lot of info on them.

As my name implies... I tend to hunt old house sites for coins. I have recently started hunting more civil war sites with a lot of luck. I love this thing we call MDing!! You never know what you'll find!! Thanks for the info Tiger!! This button is gold guilted... could it have been an officers button, maybe?

Hey Ag...Albert's has this to say about the Great Seal Button:

One style for all arms and all grades, private to Lt. General. Bronze for service and gilt for dress.

So, it appears that what you have is a dress uniform button. Looks like it will clean up to be a pretty one! ...and I agree...old house sites are a blast.

Hey Jake
Great Find Bud!:super:
You need to hit this spot some more considering it`s produced much older cw activity too. That`s a great spot:wiggle:

Look at all that gold!!!! You'd think I was in RP!! See you on the Yank-Aussie!! TNX for the help fellas!

Hey,

I found a similar button months ago, but it was not gilded. You have a lined (background/field), rimmed (the raised circle encasing your button),
General Service Button. I could not find my researched source for my button, but I am pretty sure the button is post 1911. If I remember correctly that style of button only ran for a short time.

If you have a back mark on that button, I can narrow its date down rather nicely. So, take a look and tell me what you see.

Nice find! Happy hunting!
