I was hunting a yard where there was this big tree. I got a deep signal, started digging and didn't get too far before I hit this doggone big root. Two roots that is. It was me or the roots that was going to keep whatever it was that was giving me a good signal. Needless to say, I didn't loose! Kept digging little by little and finally I saw the button. Larry has done some checking on it and it's an Illinois 1A - Army staff officer's button most likely from the 1830's. It's got a full back mark. He offered me a $1 for it. Is this a fair price? Thanks for looking and HH, Nancy

Cool its an auction. Ill give ya 2 dollars lol! Nancy I took the liberty to look on the backmarks for you, and one of them was the American Button Co. who made this very button pattern also and they where in Buisness from 1901-1917 or there abouts. I can tell you for sure this is not from the 1830's. Its still a cool button regardless. I wouldnt sell it if your into buttons.

BTW! what is the backmark on the button?

oh! cool this will make my third edit. I dug some more on the odd Backmarks( not your usual button makers ok) anyhow another maker of this type used an odd difference to there name....originally as Work Brothers & Co. but during 1881-83 they used Wore Bros & Co. So as you see I need The name off the back to pin point the time frame for you.

The back of the button is scovill mfg. co waterbury. Thanks for all the info. I would love anything about this button. Nancy

With that backmark the book says...On many different US and State MIlitia buttons. RMDC specimens date c.1850-1860; impressed small lettered b/m's date c.1850-70; large lettered b/m's date c.1870 on.

Daniel, Yes it's pressed into the back of the button and very nicely done along with dots all around underneath the printing. WOW, that's great......I guess??? Does that help any? Thanks again, Nancy

Yep your getting rich off of having fun thats about it lol!

its an american button company design based on Demoulin Brothers and Company of Greenville Illinions button circa 1835. Demoulin's enter a contract with the state of illinois in 1832 to produce 4,000 two piece coat buttons. Fewer than 500 buttons were procuded because the building that housed Demoulin and brothers burned in 1833. your button isnt listed in alberts but the demoulin button is.
