Buried 3 extra coins in my test garden tonight.

Buried 3 extra coins in my test garden tonight.

quarter at 3" on edge

Detectable solid beep with both the stock and 5.75 con coil and my Vaquero

dime on edge at 3"

Detectable solid beep with both coils, but something strange happened. Target response was on both sides of the coin not where I buried the dime. It sounded like there was a pull tab in the ground. You know double beep...

Nickel at 2" on edge.

Same solid beep, but something strange again. It wouldn't disc out until tab!
So I dug it up and checked the spot in all metal and nothing was there. (Figured there was something already in the ground.

Now in case some are wondering how I buried the coins, well..
I took an old butcher knife and pushed it into the ground to the depth I wanted, then dropped the coin in the slot. This prevented the mess of digging a plug and disturbing the ground.

Comments welcome.

The small coil detected the coins just as easy as the stock coil did.

get into real life buried targets you won't get many comments. One reason for this (and there are many) is that few people actually bury coins and test their machines. Most just hunt sites and then respond according to the finds (or lack of finds).

I think most people simply believe what someone has told them, they've always believed, or they otherwise know to be fact.

Like you I've noticed the double beep syndrome with the Tejon and other brands and models of detectors. There are all sorts of strange things that happen in ground. Wouldn't it be great if detectors responded to buried targets like they do to air tests?

I can't answer your questions but maybe it will help to know others also experience these things.

Have you ever gotten an iron sound on a deep silver coin?

There are many reasons why I don't trust detector meter readings.

Thanks for the input

can provide some learning sessions with different makes and models of detectors and search coil types and sizes. I favor the approach of just hunting sites and locating naturally lost objects and then 'test' or 'compare' different models or coils on a target prior to recovery. It can be a real education, especially since it's not tainted by the fact that you don't know what you're trying to get a signal on or identify.

Buried 3 extra coins in my test garden tonight.... If you're going to use a "test garden" you need to bury coins and typical trash, and at different angles and depths, and position some well apart for other metals, but also position some close to, above, and below other targets to learn and evaluate masking effects. It's a lot easier to just hunt a site because you can't duplicate every situation you might encounter.

Still, what you're doing is helping you learn a few things, and that's good.

... Did you sweep across the quarter from two or three directions? Not just left-to-right with the coin lined up away from you, but turn 90

Wow, I never thought of some of those things. Thanks very much for the information.
Your answers and comments to my post will make me a wiser and more successful hunter in the end.

Thanks very much.
