Had a crazy day at the beach the other day...stumbled upon an old pocket of items ..started out just finding molten metal and scraps but i soon realized none of the scrap was a aluminum. .it was all copper, brass and pewter...so i kept at it...best of it is the marine cuff 2 piece button believed to be from spanish american war era..found an NYC scoville button and even found a pewter flat button...the complete spoon has a french persons name engraved in it... found 2 50cal bullets,a US brand shotgun shell,a pewter broach and a whole lotta whatnot... oh ya,also found a pair of drafting dividers much like would have been used on a boat for navigation purposes hmmm...makes me wonder how all this stuff got concentrated on 75 yards of beach...mixed in with all the old stuff was misc clad most of which was less than 5 years old... hunted it till the tide pushed me off and the targets dryed up... was a slow day till i got to this spot then i couldnt dug the targets out fast enough... all and all a fun day... happy hunting...[attachment 326604 20160208_1745401.jpg][attachment 326605 20160208_1746251.jpg][attachment 326606 IMG_20160206_182603058_HDR1.jpg][attachment 326607 IMG_20160208_1751169391.jpg][attachment 326608 IMG_20160208_1751358481.jpg][attachment 326609 IMG_20160208_175147656_HDR1.jpg]

Nice finds! I believe of the 2-50 cal bullets you found...the one on the left is a tracer round and the right one a normal round.

I frequently find .50 cal bullets and some times the casings. Those two appear to be Armor piercing as they show rust from the steel core.

Nice Scoville Button. That is a neat find. I found one the other day that says Scoville Mfg co Waterbury. Apparently from the 1850-1865 time period. Most likely a US Naval Officers Vest Button. What was that danged Yankee doing down here in rebel country.

Thanks for comments guys... i posted button pic on whatzit forum... i know thw the army has used the great seal for many many years but im not sure how long the marines have used this emblem... here is a pic of rear of button if anyone can pinpoint the exact age that would be great.... [attachment 326732 IMG_20160206_182715171_HDR1.jpg] i believe it to be older than ww2 based on age of other finds but i dont know for sure....

I can find pictures that indicate that the button is a Marine Corp button. But I have not been able to find exactly when it may have been manufactured. One would need a Good Button Book that shows military uniform buttons.

Nice finds! I have yet to find any buttons myself.

I cannot date it except to say it is probably pre-1900. There is another Civil War forum site that will be able to date it for you....but here is your button in Albert's button book....10E. There are many varieties of your button. Also a chart to show that the backmark was used from 1849-1965.

Thank you kieth... i see now why it's not so easy pinpointing an exact date... i appreciate the info ... i had another person tell me pretty much exactly what you are saying... i believe it be be from 1900 give or take 10 years... thanks for you input...

Nice haul there, bootyhoundpa! I especially like your U.S. Marine Corps button and that neat old spoon. Best of luck and...

Happy Hunting!
