Bullet

We went relic hunting this last weekend and one of the bullets I dug up was identified, I thought by one of my hunting buddies as a 45-70 bullet. Once I got home, I took my calipers and it measured 0.515 diameter. That is too large for a 45-70 bullet. Can someone help me and tell me what rifle shot this bullet? It has a slightly cupped base, but not like a Minnie ball. Whoever shot it, hit something, so the nose is deformed, so I do not know if it was a round nose or flat nose. Could it have been one of the variations of the Sharps rifles?

Weight....443.5 grains
Diameter.....0.512-0.515

I was hoping someone would have a good idea as to what this bullet was shot out of?? It was from Texas and from a place where the soldiers traveled and camped.

Post Civil war, probably Indian Wars era. I don't know much about what guns shot them but like Richard said, Google will tell you all you want to know about them.

I do not think it is post civil war. Also, why search 45-70 when the bullet is 0.512-0.515 diameter, which corresponds to 50 or 52 caliber Sharps, 50 caliber Spencer, Springfield Trapdoor 50 caliber? Oh well, I will just know that it is some 50 caliber bullet.

I know so much because I HAVE searched and that was what I found, thanks for the rude remark

glad to help
