Bullet ID

I found this bullet in a sand bar along the shore of a local river and was wondering approximately how old it could be or if it was modern day bullet. It has a groove approximatly 2/3 of the way up and below that there is a diamond shaped "cross hatch" pattern. Any information would be great!

Although it resembles a bullet, I'm not sure it is. Unless it is a large caliber or shotgun slug (they had them during the CW too), it is something that a person incised the design into. It looks as though it has lands and grooves from rifling (fired bullet) but the design overlay's this. Curious find. Can you tell me what the cavity looks like inside; rounded, flat, conical?

Here are a couple of photos for size comparison, on the left is a 40 caliber cartridge and a dime on the right. The cavity on the inside is flat and approximately 1/8" in depth.
