Bullet Casing Identification

allinson

New member
I found two bullet casings. I will post pics of them tomorrow when I can get them in the sun light. The flash was distorting them.

They both are rim fire, 50 and 45 cal.

The both have an H in the center with a circle around it.

The 50 was hit with a single firing pin.

The 45 was hit with a double firing pin.

I think they might be from a Henry repeating rifle.

Allinson:

You are probably right about Henry or could be Model 1866 Winchester for .44
I am anxious to see the .50

Were these found at a Civil War Site?

Sorry I have not been able to post picks. I have been having some computer problems. I will try and get them on tomorrow and hopefully that will help it identifying them.

Thanks for your response

Here are some pics of the casings. Three in all. The two darker ones have an H with a circle around it. I am sure the one is 44 cal, but not sure of any other specifics. The third pic is of a 44 cal?

Allinson:
Thanks for the pictures although they are not too clear.

All of the casings are Rimfire vs Centerfire.

Is the casing base or rim diameter with flange, (see in part in enclosed picture) the same for bullet casing (3) and casing (2 - the bigger diameter when compared to casing 1)?

Casing (1) is probably a .44 Henry

Is there a single dent at the edge of casing 2? and like enclosed picture? If so, I can tell you what you have. Can't tell from your pictures.

Were these casings found at a Civil War site?

The 44 had two primer strikes.

The larger one (I assume a 50 cal) only had one strike.

I am real curious about the rim fire. This one had never been shot. It was sitting on a rock and crumbled in my hand when I picked it up.

Thanks for you help

Oh, no they were not found at a civil war site.

Allinson:

I believe all the casings are post Civil War. Casing 1 and 3 are probably .44 for the Henry and casing 2 (.50 caliber ) is a shot Spencer.

Check out my article on Spencers from the Indian Wars. for more details. You might look on the casing for confirmation marks.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Thank you for the info. The 50 was shot from a spencer and the 44 from the Henry. The article you wrote was very good and valuable. It was well written and researched.

What are your thoughts on the unshot 44 centerfire?

That one is a little beyond my pay level. Could be rifle or pistol. I'd probably guess rifle.
