The bullet weighs 1.1 ounce (30 grams) the button is metal and heavy for its size. Found them within feet of each other.
Any info on either would be appreciated.

Thanks

The bullets a common federal "3 ringer" from the civil war. The button looks like a federal trouser button, also from the civil war.

I found the bullet and button in what is now a popular park in Sacramento County Calif. that was a ranch at the turn of the century.

Thanks again VaBill

When viewing the photo I suspected the bullet had an arsenal-marking in its base-cavity. Now I see you've confirmed that. You'll probably want to know that the star means this "Minie ball" was manufactured at the Washington DC aresenal. (Of course, that means it's a yankee minie. It was made for use in a .58-caliber Springfield rifle.

By the way, resist the temptation to carry it around in your pocket. Its white-ish Lead Oxide patina is the proof that it's a genuine civil war era item, not a modern reproduction. The patina is as thin as paint, and pocket-coins will soon scrape it off.

Your question kinda-sorta indicates it's the first civil war bullet you've dug. If so, congratulations. :)

The button is the type used on civilian-made long-underwear (and some shirts) in the 1800s. We find lots of them in civil war military encampments. Some were made of brass, and a few of zinc, but the great majority were iron.
