Bulldog (Lion?) Button - Any Ideas

This site dates from colonial era to 1840 or so. Thought at first it was a rose, then when cleaning I was surprised when I saw the bulldog (lion?) staring at me. Notice two small holes on back....about the size of a quarter. Any idea whether it's military or civilian. British troops may have been here. Thanks for any help!
