Bug Problems on Hunt

chuckciao

New member
In my last few hunts, I have been attacked by Mosquito's and other small bugs. Have been using Cutter Insect Repellent Wipes but they do not seem to work on these pests. Can anyone suggest so good insect repellent that can keep those pests away.
thanks
Chuck

I use Deep Woods Off.

Unfortunately I forgot to put it back in my car for the start of this years detecting season and I could have really used it tonight. Nothing like getting bonked in the head with your Pro Pointer or digger while trying to fend off bugs.

Go to Walmart or Cabelas and buy a thermacell unit. It works good in Alaska for mosquitoes. Just fire it up and carry it on your belt or back pak.

Are they good for chiggers too?

I'm right with you on that, I got bit up by black flies the last time out, I hate those things. I still have welts on my forearms and legs. I have some 40 DEET in my tackle box, taking that with me next time.

Thanks, I never heard of ThermaCell before? So I looked it up: http://www.thermacellrefills.com/thermacell_how_it_works.html It is suppose to give off Allethrin which is a synthetic copy of a natural insecticide Pyrethrin. It is extracted from a certain chrysanthemum flower. Pyrethrin can repel and kill insects but will not harm humans or animals. I DO worry that breathing in a chemical in my lungs for hours on end will hurt my health BUT they say it has no harm.

Has anyone tried the small belt carry, electronic battery powered units that give off a sound frequency to keep away mosquitos?

Avon skin so soft hammers em... no kidding...

Here is an old bush remedy for insects etc, items needed are methalated spirits,a household detergent, and baby oil
mix equal amounts ie: 1/3 1/3 1/3 into a spray applicator shake and spray on.Bugs dont like the detergent or the meths
and the baby oil gives a base abit like sunscreen etc.And wifey will think you smell pretty cool too.....kiwi jim

Thanks for the great tips!!
As an alternative to the Thermocell, has anyone tried this device?
The "OFF" units have worked well for me when hunting (deer) in the fall, but I haven't used one in the spring yet. I'm planning to pick up another one today to try while MD'ing. Skeeters drove me in last night.
If there's a breeze, they don't work as well, but aren't bad as long as it's kept upwind.

Thermacell's work very well in still conditions, but need to be kept on their back while in use, to prevent them from burning out. They aren't designed or intended to function in the holster.

Thanks jeepcj5,
I ordered the Avon Skin so soft and it worked brilliantly!!!!! Not a single bug came even close in over 2 hours. I got two tubes for $14 and it should last me all season.

Here in West Central Illinois we have those pesky buffalo gnats that just drive you crazy buzzing around your face. I have tried the skin so soft from avon, vanilla spray, and all the other products that people say works for them with little success. The best product I found so far is called Buggins and it works great. You might have to apply it every couple of hours but it does keep the bugs away and it smells pretty good also.
