buckle

I found this buckle in confederate/union camp in Louisiana . I have little information for ID . It measures 3 1/2inches across, made of heavy brass. And also has a Anchor Symbol stamp on outer edge. Could be Navy or Marine ? If anyone could help? Please e-mail Richard Crawford relics7772001@yahoo.com [attachment 29813 Picture001.jpg]

Looks like a buckle off of a girt or cinch strap from a saddle. I dont know how old it is but you got a good one...d2

Seems to have been used on other horse tack such as this bridle ring. I found this in a civil war context in West Virginia, and I have heard of another found in a civil war context in Kentucky. I wonder if you could use that mark to date these items.

Steve,

There were two many little buckles being discussed, and I flubbed up this morning posting on Richard's other buckle thread.... about the North and Judd spurs..... I have a pair. They're not in near as good condition as those you posted the link to. Did you find any info on how old the North and Judd company was? I think the spurs I have are from the early 1900's.

Thanks,

Kim

Looks like they have been around since 1812 and did supply the Union army during the civil war. Here is a little excerpt from The Hog River Journal: "By the time of the Civil War New Britain had a number of factories that made not only hardware but turned out military goods such as cavalry equipment and bayonets. The North & Judd Co. supplied the army with silver-plated buckles, hooks and eyes, coat clasps for uniforms, and spurs and saddle hardware." It looks like they were mainly into hardware and saddlery in their early days and continued to expand and diversify until they were bought out in the late 1960s. So while they did supply some items during the civil war, I don't know how you can say what is period and what is post war, or when they started marking items with that little anchor.

Steve,

I do appreciate your help. Ever since I found this set of spurs, I have been really curious about them. I did a lot of internet searches right after I found them, but the info wasn't easy in finding. I think you gave me more info in your short post than I was able to obtain back then. I do remember finding a picture that matched with my spurs, and I want to think it said they were circa 1910.

There was a buckle of some type posted on another forum that had this anchor symbol on it, but thinking it was post war, I did not respond (so as not to deflate the finds value to the finder). Now I'm gonna have to go back and find that old post and tell the lady what you have allowed here.

Thanks again,

Kim
