I personally feel that anyone who comes to a metal detecting forum and ask ""WHAT IS THIS WORTH""? Should be completely shunned! Just my feelings about it, and i hope everyone else has the same feelings.

yowow, We don't have the same feelings which is nice because most of us deal with humans and such touchy feelings are too easily wounded by humans.

phintar, Welcome to findmall. You've found a really cool looking buckle, and rare too! Here is one found by another detectorist.....

I cannot find any specimens offered for sale, but since yours is not complete it will have lost a considerable amount of value. If your very interested in finding a value, you may have to find an auction house that deals with 19th century mining items. There is a market for items like this but being incomplete certainly affects the appeal. If I were you, I would try very hard to find the other half.

I think that's a valid question on the value of the item, heck it that's why we metal detect were looking for treasure. If that's a common item is too cool to be worth much man. But if it is rare it would be would have value.

phintar, welcome to the forum. In my opinion there was nothing in your post to apologize about. Many of us here ask about value. Nice buckle. Wish I could help you with it but its something I know nothing about. Now go find the other half.:detecting:

I found the same type and time period buckle on Ebay except that the Ebay buckle pictured a star on it. It was metal detector dug, had both pieces, and also had some damage. It sold for $153. I found it in the Ebay completed items section using the keywords miners buckle or you can use the item number 150963812892. Good luck finding the other half of yours.

wow! Thank you all for your support and information on this buckle... I looked up that ebay link and ended up running into this link http://www.ebay.com/itm/California-Gold-Rush-pre-Civil-War-cast-miners-tongue-for-belt-plate-rare-/170777628998?nma=true&si=GQWckjEVJwlDsfpSDQE2qfRegyc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 or this item number 170777628998. In the pictures he has a picture of the buckle in a magazine and it says towards the bottom that only 10 are known! Did I get lucky with this or what? Its my first real find and I am super excited! I will be going out today to try and find the sencond half!!!!!!

Truth be told, I found this with a Bounty Hunter and would love to sell it and make enough to get a Whites, thats why Im so currious about the value of the items I post...

There are eleven known to exist now.....GL finding the other half! Its always fun having a goal when your hunting a given area. Knowing the other half must have fallen near by should give you plenty of motivation to keep swinging that coil! I wish I found a spot that gave up goodies like that. :)

I am not in this hobby for money, i am in it for the enjoyment of finding items of history and the stories behind them. But to each their own. My post about phintars asking about value was harsh and it was wrong. So phintar i apologize to you.

Nice find phintar.

I'm in it for both, but I like the treasure aspect of it most. I have sold thousands in the gold I have found, and I really like it when I cash in.
Good Luck.
