For some unbeknown reason to me, I have been unable to upload pictures to the forum and haven't taken the time to see what Apple can do about it, but will.
Anyway, my hunting buddy and I have been hunting a piece of ground that has started to turn out a few surprising finds. This piece of ground is beside a inner city older park that yielded us a few Mercury dimes, Rosies and wheat cents. Upon looking into the history of the adjacent plot of ground I discovered it started to see good activity back in 1931 to the present time so once we got the go ahead to hunt some on it we did. Wheat cents started showing up on it almost immediately and then the occasional Mercury and silver Rosie and a couple of pre silver Washington's along with a few pieces of silver jewelry.. Coins over all don't seem to be concentrated and clad and wheats and silver just seem to be where ever they turn up.
About ten days or so ago my buddy recovered the first neat surprise, a Confederate I button and since, a couple of three ring bullet drops. Those got us wondering and the hopes that some older coins might show up. Then about a week ago he hits a toasted no date large cent. Then, we each scored Barber coins, he a quarter and me a dime. And all along, more recent era silver dimes kept popping up.
With fog and misty conditions to contend with yesterday, I grabbed the A T Pro. Its water proof, you know! Having ventured a little off our normal track and not finding all that much, I finally hit a wheatie. As coins in general are often few and far between, once we hit an older coin we start running a tighter grid in that general area. A few minutes later I got a sweet sounding 81-82 reading thinking maybe another wheat or clad dime. Breaking open the clod of dirt with my Pro pin pointer I spotted a portion of a small smokey disc. in the damp dirt. Thinking maybe it might be a well Worn Merc. or Barber due to the little lower reading for silver dimes on my A T, I was shocked to see the back of a Spanish Reale. It turned out to be a 1812 1/2 Reale minted in Mexico City. I've been chasing old coins with a detector for 45 + years now and that is my first Reale coin. Truthfully, most any detector could have hit the 5" deep coin, but because the A T Pro is water proof, it holds the honors of recovering my oldest coin to date. HH jim tn
