Bucket list coin! :garrett:

With the recent rains down our way and more normal like temps. my hunting muddy and I have been able to start getting some hunting done on some of our older spots and this morning we hit one.

This spot has been hard hit, but still gives up a goodie here and there. Almost right out of box my buddy recovered a beautiful Eagle A button. And it is a beauty! The rest of the morning was mainly digging some iffy signals of little consequence. Although I did manage to get my coil over 3 wheat cents. 1 was a surprise and was spotted when rinsing my coins off after I got home.1 of the wheats apparently tangled with a lawn mower as its date is clipped off. The other 2 have dates of 36 and 29.

About half way through the hunt I dug a somewhat broken signal and from about 5" recovered the sterling silver piece. Not sure what it is part of, but a little is better then none.

Right near the end of the hunt I got another broken signal showing very little depth and from about 3" I spotted a small silver disc in my dirt clod. Upon closer careful inspection, with my buddy looking over my shoulder, we both spotted a Seated Lady and I knew it had to be a half dime. Its a 1841o. Man, those things are small. That sweet thing is my first half dime. As mentioned, in the ground it was pretty much a broken signal. Out of the ground the half dime read 75/76, so if you are on old ground, keep this in mind.

That makes 2 bucket list coins for me this year. Back in the summer I recovered a really beautiful 1855o, with arrows, Seated half dollar. With a couple of silver dimes and a silver Washington quarter recovered over the weekend, the half dime puts me on 114 silver coin recoveries for the year. HH jim tn

Nice find.

Woohoo! Nice bucket list coin Jim! I hit 3 bucket lists this year, with one more hunt lined up for tomorrow. Who knows...tomorrow could be #4

Nice half dime! I've only found one of these. Back in the early '80's. In a very old city park in the west. southwest part of Indiana.
I remember. It had a bb size hole off to one side of lady libertys head ...i don't remember the year.... Mabey.... 1857?? Dunno bout that... But i do remember it also was only bout three maybe four inches deep... I'm guessing it was used as a necklace?? Or something ...hence the hole in it.... Anyway. Great finds!

Congrats on the half dime. They are few and far between. I found one once in a elementary school tot lot. Rang in like a zinc penny. Totally shocked it was there. Think it was in dirt brought in to level the ground around the school. I hunt a lot o civil War sites and have found eighteen of them over the years. Keep hunting those old spots.

Thanks, jimmy, yeah, Civil War camps seems to be where most of them show up. Although not a lot know it, the area saw a good bit of period activity.

GS, I was swinging the Sharp Shooter NEL coil. Typically, on a spot like it is I would have on the bigger 11" coil, but there are patches with a lot of iron and more modern trash so I went with a little smaller coils to see if it could sniff something out of those areas. And it did.! However, it would have been a recovery for anyone with any kind of detector as long as they were somewhat inquisitive. HH jim tn

Congratulations on a super nice find Jim! Can you please explain in more specific detail about the tone of the broken signal. For example was it consistently sounding like iron in one direction with a high tone in the other? What ultimately convinced you to stop and dig this "broken signal" Thanks - Jim

Jim, as I'm recalling, it was a soft high tone one way with a "click" like mid tone the other. Not a iron tone/grunt. I don't spend a lot of time analyzing a target, like circling it and checking it from various directions. If I'm on an old spot that has potential for older finds, I'll dig some mixed tone signals. In the case of the half dime, I suspect its might have been right on the cusp of tid for mid/high tone targets. Having said that, the Liberty Cap yesterday was all a soft sounding high tone....and it was deeper. This one perhaps could have been on edge, too. HH jim tn

Thanks Jim for the detailed audio report! I was asking as I am wondering if I need to start digging many more iffy signals. I know I do at this old park I hunt as targets are sparse. I am one who actually tends to spend a little extra time in analyzing before digging as to gain a deeper understanding of how targets sound / behave in dense iron. Then I place that experience into my rolodex memory (what's left of it anyways lol) for future hunts. I completely understand the "soft" "softness" of the tone you speak of. That is a very telling sign even if it is one-way or a mid-tone like you experienced. Thanks again for taking the time in answering. - Jim
