BUCCANEER SAND SCOOP?

ClayC

New member
I have been shopping for sand scoops to be used in the Ocean Surf and have found the model Buccaneer Sand Scoop (Model #706). Is this a good scoop for this purpose? the description does not say its galvanized or stainless steel. Does any body have a pros or cons about this model?

Reilly's makes the Buccaneer scoop but I wouldn't reccomend it for use in the surf or wet sand.

Things I have learned...

1. A scoop with 5/8 holes is mandatory!

2. Travel Scoops, 2 piece scoops, do not last and the metal oxidizes quickly causing the sections to stick together. They also become wobbly at the joint.

3. Large Scoops with a wire mesh cannot repeatedly withstand the foot pressure used to push it into sand. The smaller scoops seem tuff enough.

4. Sand sticks to aluminum scoops causing sifting to be more difficult

5 Stainless steel scoops are heavy but sift sand quickly and even break into sand almost effortlessly. I like it!

6. Long handled scoops are required when working the ocean surf.

7. The brace at the back of the long handle "ALUMINUM SCOOP" that connects to the rear of the scoop should be longer than 4 inches. A longer brace adds more weight but helps prevent the handle from being bent when you pry sand. Regardless, the aluminum handle is weak and can still bend. See the picture below.

** Below is a stainless steel "Monster Scoop" from Reilly's. It has a custom handle used to pull the scoop out of the sand. It works great! The scoop is 7 pounds. The picture reads less because the scale was wrong.**

I got the RTG 6" MONSTER ALUMINUM WATER SCOOP from Reilly's
This scoop has monster style bucket design cut out on plasma table. The bucket is made of aluminum with 5/8" holes punched through out the bucket. The bucket then has an extra T-Top aluminum piece added to the top of the scoop for strength. The handle is anodized aluminum and will not turn your hand black like other aluminum scoops that are on the market today. The scoop bucket is 11" long by about 6" in diameter. The bucket is 1/8" thick aluminum for strength. Overall length of this scoop is a little over 46" long. There is a rubber hand grip for comfort. This scoop can be used in and out of the water, it is light enough. Try one out today for yourself and see how well it works! Made in the U.S.A. This scoop weighs 4.25 pounds on a postal scale.
