Brothers big silver bust find 1795! Question on getting graded?

Mark kus

Well-known member
My brother scored this bust dollar I’ve never seen one in person and there are a few variations of this coin he found it in an old house he was working in.
My question is where should he send it for grading?
Who have you used and cost? And we’re you satisfied with the results?
Thanks

Awesome Coin - pretty rare in any grade. I'm not a pro but I will offer my opinion on grading. PCGS or NGC are the industry standards - you have join up with certain groups such as ANA (for NGS) or PCGS directly to submit coins. Otherwise you could submit the coin through your local coin shop who is probably a member of one or both.

Now the other question - is grading worth it? You can figure that it will cost around $60 to get the coin graded. It is a draped bust (both varieties of this coin are worth about the same) - it is not the ultra rare and valuable flowing hair dollar. My concern with getting the coin graded is that it is not going to grade very well. It may get an "authentic" grade meaning that it is a "real coin" but damaged so no numeric 1-70 number would be assigned. I suspect this may happen due to environmental damage, the rim ding near the "S" on the reverse, the "x-shaped" cut in the center of the eagle, and it could happen if the coin has ever been cleaned. If it got a grade it would perhaps be in the G4 to G6 range, but I am not a professional grader and it is tough to make an educated guess in pictures.

If it was me I would get it graded - just to confirm it is a legitimate coin. That would make it easier to sell if you decide to do so, and if he got a numerical grade that would be a bonus.

I came across one of these last year on Ebay...it was a Bust Dollar someone was selling as a Large Cent....long story short I bought it for a song and dance, and wondered if I should submit it for authenticity. If you go to the PCGS website and look at the hi-res pictures of their "1795 Off-Centered Dr Bust" dollar coin, look at the photos and see if everything on the PCGS coin matches yours. Look for die markers, inadvertent "die "mistakes" and such...pull out a loupe or magnifying glass and with enough scrutiny you'll be able to tell genuine/fake rather quickly. There's also a comparison of the Off-Centered and Centered Bust Obverse varieties that may help...

Yours is a rarer version of the Bust Dollar and my amateur opinion on it would be to submit the coin for grading/authenticity after checking it against the pictures. PCGS and other coin-grading services will be more lenient when it comes to scratches, gouges, nicks, etc with a large dollar-sized coin vs a penny or dime. Larger coins get damaged easier simply because of their mass; and I believe yours has enough meat left for a proper grade (G4 to G6 would be my guess)

PCGS "slabbed" coins will carry a slight premium over NGC and ANACS-graded coins even if the comparing coins are identical in every way....people simply pay more for PCGS holdered coins all other variables being equal....IMO spend the $100 to $120 to get it graded!

Good luck and what a beautiful coin!
