Broke stock coils ears.

David

New member
Yesterday I broke both ears on my stock 9" MF C Coil. I had the stock shaft on it and I did not abuse it as I was taking it in and out of the vehicle somehow it snapped both coil ears. On each side the plastic pieces that broke off are shattered in 2 or more pieces.

I saw how someone made spacer washers from an ice cream pale lid. 1) I wonder if I could make black ones and glue them on what is left of the ears on the coil?

2) I know that Loctite Sumo and Loctite Superglue are recommended for plastic repair, any other recommendations?

So I will not have to send it back to Minelab. 3) What type of glue to use, and any very brief repair advice is appreciated?

I think Mark in s e iowa had a fix. Do a couple searches David there were a rash of broken coil ears for a while. There were also a couple good fixes.

Jeff

Thanks!

>>>John(Tx), I used " Dow Betaseal One Urethane Adhesive " and the red cap primer. I think the primer number is " 5500d " or you can use Betaseal U-418. If you need to glue a x-terra coil let me know and I'll explain things a little better and tell you where you can find this urethane.
>>>Doug I don't know if you want to use the stuff I used to fix my coil, because I just broke my coil again today. I don't know what I'm going to use to fix it this time. Does anybody have a 10.5 DD 7.5 coil that they want to sell, cheap, lol. Let me know if you do.

>>>I too had no idea that it would be covered by warranty and made repairs myself, I used a rugged cement/ glue and 2 vinyl washers, I attached the washers to each side and it worked perfect and its very sturdy, not too mention I can now tighten the coil correctly.
>>>I wouldnt try the washer method, One of them broke, I got very frustrated but to my relief I called Minelab and since the coil is under warranty They told me to send it in for replacement, I admitted trying to repair it unaware that it was covered, It just goes to show you READ THE SMALL PRINT on your warranty! If something breaks dont panic. The washers were luckily easily removed ( I guess my repair job wasnt so great) and it just looks like a broken coil again. When I receive the replacement I will definately add an xtra washer to each side for stability.

>>>Thanks for the info. I contacted minelabusa.com and they are aware of the problem and will replace with a new one if you E-mail your information to them.
I haven't received it yet but I will let you all know if it comes I hope they in proved yoke on the coil.

>>>The tip of one of ears from the bolt hole outward is broken off on my 9" stock coil.
I don't know what type of glue to use on it. I have 4 minute J-B Weld and also 5 minute Loctite Quick Set Epoxy. Which one, Or is there something else that would be better to use.

>>>Don't touch it if it's still under warranty, they will replace it. Even if you bought just the coil new, it has a 1 year warranty. There was a thread a couple of pages back on this

But still NO permanent fix solutions, they all broke after being repaired, does anyone have a successful glue fix solution for coil ears that actually worked?

Also I am passed my warranty, did Minelab replace any of your coils after the warranty expired?

From what I've heard, Minelab has been pretty fair with those having a broken ear on a coil. In fact I've not heard of anyone who has been turned down, regardless of 3-year coil warranty timeframe. Apparently Minelab realized that the distance between the two ears was more than the width of the rod, and replaced those that have been broken by overtightening the nut. However, I'm not sure what they'd say about one that had both ears broken. The two ears had to obviously been broken at the same time, as one ear breaking would have kept the other from getting enough force to break it too. I'd suggest you give them a call and ask what to do. As their warranty suggests, the coil is warranted for a period of 3 years from the date of retail purchase. (At least that is what mine says on the X-705 Limited Warranty card) But it also says the warranty does not cover items damaged by accident, misuse, negligent act or omission, alteration, modifications or unauthorized service by the Purchaser or any other party. So before you try to fix it and end up with less than expected results, I'd give them a call. The worse that can happen is they won't replace it and you try to mend it. The best thing that could happen is they replace it for you. Let us know how it works out. HH Randy

I also just noticed my stock coil which I haven't even used in 7 months had a broken ear. It wasn't broke when I last took it off but must have been cracked.
When I looked at the other ear there was a couple of hairline cracks and when I touched it, the other ear cracked on the top.
I have a call into Minelab but I have no warranty.

Anybody out here been turned down for this problem that didn't have a warranty?
I'll let you know what they tell me when they call back.

Thanks,
Lambo

Randy(Digger), thanks for that help, it is appreciated!

I have not contacted them in the last 2 weeks since it happened. Yes Lambo, let us know what Minelab tells you about out of warranty broken stock coil ears on an X-70?? Will replace, fix, or not?

I would call Minelab first if the warranty is up. But I am pretty sure they will still stand by their product as this is a common problem with the stock coils ( and I believe there is another frequency coil that sports the same design) that hopefully they are going to correct soon. I sent mine back to be replaced and had a brand new one back in less than two weeks, I added a thin washer to each side for xtra stability without stressing the coil ears. I wish they would just ditch the stock design and use the same design as my 6" coil. The ears on that coil are thick and sturdy, a much better design. I think they went a little too far in keeping the stock coil slim and lightweight..

call Minelab. broken coil ears are a known problem on that coil. haven't had that problem with mine but have talked to quite a few people who have and Minelab seems to be taking care of all of them.
