Broke coil ear, worth trying to Fix?

Tico

Member
I traded for a nice Explorer XS, I cracked one of the ears on the stock 1050 coil when mounting it on the lower rod.
The ear didn't completely break off but I cracked it pretty good.
I was wondering if I would be spinning my wheels trying to repair and use this coil or just look for a good used one
I also got a sunray X-8 with the detector which will suffice as main coil.
Just wanted to have both 1050 and the X-8

Go to Lowes and pick you up some two part Epoxy made for plastic.
Sand the areas to get rid of the gloss first and put it on thick and use a tooth pick to get it into the crack.
That should do the trick.

What I would do if it were mine,,,
if the coil is black,, its ABS plastic,,if its white, it could be PVC plastic,,you can call Minelab to be sure.
Next, get some of the same type plastic and make 2 round plastic washers...
get some laq. thinner and clean the surfaces to be glued,,,get some all purpose glue, for ABS,PVC and CPVC plastic and glue the plastic washers to the ears.. and use some kind of small clamp to clamp them together...
Do a dry run first,, to make sure the plastic washer fits and the hole lines up....
Hope this helps.

2-part epoxy will work good .. and letting it harden overnight will work even better.

JB Weld epoxy will also do wonders for repairs . I've used it on a coil and a lower shaft with excellent results .

[size=medium]i understand the 1050 coil to be a very good coil so yeah ya godda do what ya can to revive it. looks like others have covered what ya can use that'll work. here's hoping.

both mine broke completely off. I used gorilla glue. I put some on let dry and repeated 3X. Still holding strong but only 4 times out with the fix.

that is the week point with Mine lab coils I have repaired several 9" coil ears and they are holding and working for years after the fix. with the new glues and epoxy's out they will fix and hold better then new and with the price mine Lab charges for there coils its worth your wile and pocket book to fix them.
