Brass Cartridge

Mikeconley

New member
I found two cartridges this morning with the marking LC40 on the bottom. I am not sure what type they are but one of the guys with me said they a 30-06.
One has a star pattern and the other is circular.
I am not a "gun guy" so I have no idea what they are. Any help identifying the cartridge would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, for some reason the picture is not showing.

30cal. military round (or possibly 30.06 if the casing is not as pictured below) manufactured by Lake City arsenal (Lake City Ammunition Plant, Lake City, MO) in 1940. It's possible it is not a .30 carbine shell, especially if it looks like a 30.06 which has a wider base and necked down to 30 cal. I cannot see your picture so this is the best I can guess that it looks like. Does it have the Nato stamp?

Here is an example made in 1952....

Thanks for the reply Aron, not sure what is going on with the pictures. The markings do not match the pictures you posted, the year is separated in the 6 and 9 position.

The characters are in the following positions.

12 - L
3- C
6 - 4
9 - 0

I have been searching the net for sometime today and it looks like the headstamp is telling me it is Lake City but 2004, not 1940 as I hoped.

It should be easy to tell by how the 4 is oriented. Which of these two examples look like yours?
The example below would be made in 2004.....

If the LC is oriented as I placed them in my examples, then they maintained the BOTTOM of the letters/numbers towards the primer in a rotation order. That being the case, the following numbers would be 40 unless they broke the orientation for the numbers and placed the TOP of the numbers towards the primer. It would be much less confusing with a picture. :)

Since your pictures are now loading I can see that it is made in 2004. I can't tell if it necks down like a 30.06 or if it is a straight casing like a .30 carbine(VERY unlikely considering it is modern). Your picture has one clue about the caliber, the size of the primer compared to the diameter of the casing indicates that it is a large casing such as a 30.06 as shown in the chart below. Here is the chart you can compare your casing to and see if it looks like any of these(notice the size of the primer in relation to the casings). The 30.06 will measure about 2.5 inches long. The base diameter will be exactly 12mm(grab a 12mm wrench out of the toolbox to measure it, a 1/2 wrench will fit loosely).
