Brass Button ID -Need Help

Last year I posted a picture of a large brass button that I had recovered in a field near the Wilderness Road in Southwest Virginia. Today I returned to that same field and recovered another brass button. I do not recall seeing a brass button quite like this one. The button is 11/16" in diameter and 1/4" concave. The shank was attached when I found it and in my excitement I attempted to clean the dirt out with my knife (dumb move) and broke the shank. There are no backmark on the button. The only marking on the front of the button are a series of dots (which can not bee seen in pic)
so I sketched a pic to depict them. Thanks TomB

I believe that is an upholstery button, like on a couch or chair. The loop on the back of it is where a string was pulled through and tied to the coils in the back of the chair or couch and pulling it tight is why buttons on your uphostery are back farther that most of the fabric.

Could be right Boris...only I havent seen a brassbutton on a chair or couch. Tom
