Brass buckle

New member
Just found this at an old military school site and I'm wondering if anyone has any information about this type of buckle. It's brass, fairly heavy and has no markings. Thanks in advance for any help.

Looks like some kind of strap tensioner...Do not think it is a proper buckle

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure I agree, however, as there are a couple of things about it that really convinced me it was a buckle of some sort (maybe not a belt buckle, however). There's some evidence of bright plating or gilding on it which doesn't show up well in the pics and it simply doesn't seem sturdy enough to be a tensioner. The convex fromt also looks more decorative than functional. I believe it was once highly polished and reflective.

It was the site of a military school from 1865 to 1895.
