Brand spanking new CZ-3D

I was looking for a metal detector cause I had lost my expensive ($25) each arrows at the local archery range. While looking around, I got an email from my boss giving me a $150 gift certificate to amazon.com for a job well done.

Great I thought as I went through the amazon site and looked at every metal detector they had and tried to find info on the various models and reviews.

I ended up with the Fisher CZ-3D. I dunno if this was a good choice since it was more than the $150 gift certificate, much more. However I figure since Im getting something for one purpose why not discover a new hobby. So here I am. Did I make a mistake?

No mistake!!! The 3D is a great machine. It can be a little difficult to learn because it is set up somewhat different than most detectors. If you will PM me your email address, I can give you some links that will explain it's operation and help you learn to use it effectively.

You did not make a mistake. You got one of the deepest, most accurate detectors made. If you have any questions, get on the CZ forum and ask the question. It is an easy detector to master and I'm sure that in no time your will be digging old silver. R.L.

but will be even more helpful with the CZ because that is what he is using:

You have one of the best available. Check out Mike's CZ page

Also, if I could give only one tip on using the 3D, it would be to stay out of enhanced mode in a new park where there are lots of pull tabs. If it's an old park that's still in use then use enhanced mode but learn at what depth the pull tabs stop and dig everything deeper than that.

And here I thought I was the only smart guy with that idea.
I could not agree more, that tip about the pull tab / enhanced mode works like magic. Its not 100% all the time but you will dig a lot less tabs. Just remember that most small gold rings will i.d. as pull tabs.
Small neck chains and gold charms will i.d. as pull tabs. When your hunting in a area that has few tabs, dig it anyway.

As far as the Cz-3D, its my favorite detector to use. It swings fast, its deep. I found a quarter in damp sand at about 23 inches.
It is easy to become an expert, quickly with this detector.

Thanks for all the advice. I just checked my UPS tracking at work and the detector with probe and accessories are on my front porch! I am here at work antsy to just go home and hit my back yard! I can't wait!

Well, got home, skipped the instructions and went outside LOL. First sound I hear, I start digging. The ground was hard as rock, and I pried up one big rock and put it aside then I used the detector again and for some reason the sound moved. Hmm odd. I used the little probe and realized the big piece of rock was the culprit! Wasn't a rock at all but some kind of metal gear. Ok, so on to the next object. Next object is a rusty nail. Hmmm? What if I switch it from auto detect to one of these numbers? I start moving around and next object I find is a zinc cover of something buried deep in the ground. I didn't even bother to pull it out. I keep going around and manage to get a solid high tone this time. It turns out to be a brass screw. Man awful lot of junk in my yard. I end up with a ton of nails, screws and odd metal objects. No coins.

Well guess it is time to read the instruction book.

Finally read the instruction book and I think I got it figured out. Ground balanced the machine and followed the techniques in the book. Found my first two clad. The house is only built in 1968 so I didn't expect much. Was just a 1969 dime and a 1975 quarter. I have a very hard mineralized ground and it is making every beep take forever to dig.

What is everyone using to dig faster?

You are hooked!

Get this: http://www.dixie-metal-detectors.com/digging%20tools.htm

page down to the Lesche trowel/digger. It is really awesome. Get one of those and a Lesche ground shark shovel with the ball handle, you'll be all set!
