Brand new Sovereign GT

Bill N.

New member
Well I went out and bought a new Sovereign GT after reading this forum for awhile now. Gonna be an interesting learning curve after using an ACE250. I wanted the sov. for hunting the beaches and shallow surf here in Fl.
I do have one question. The minelab hip/chest mount bag seems to be fairly flimsy and ill fitting. Does anyone know if there may be a better after market one out there?? Prefer neoprene for water resistance.

Any and tips on getting a painless start with the GT will be appreciated.

Congrats Bill,
I am in the same boat with you, Ace 250 I have but a long way from Fla to Pa. Waiting for my new GT to arrive!

Some real good tips on this forum and a couple other forums, most of what I have read (many many) posts say read the manual, get the settings right, learn the tones, swing slooooooo!

Also when I find it again is a verryy good YouTube video on using your ACE250 on one of these forums, I'll send a link to you!

i got a camo belt bag at a local army surplus store, works great.i like it much better than the Minelab bag. $9

:minelab:What do you mean, "water resistance?" If you mean something just to keep the spray off the machine, the Minelab bag will work fine as it has a see thru plastic cover. If you mean Waterproof, you are going to have to have the GT inserted into a waterproof box with gaskets. It is much easier to use the Excal I or II for water hunting.

I bought a two pocket pouch at Lowes for the control box and the meter but it has no cover or isn't water resistance.

Well two weeks and learning. Did the normal play with it in the yard thing. This machine is very user friendly. Last Sunday took it to the beach (Gulf Coast) after reading the instruction book (again) set it to all metal and had a good time. Low tide and i was able to pretty much go almost waist deep with the box chest mounted. No great finds, but i did add to the clad collection in the 5gal. water bottle. Another trip scheduled for next sun. (it's getting good and warm down here) hope to see several more of the elusive wild bikinis that abound the Florida beaches.

Hey Bill, I'm NOT TRYING TO BE INSULTING, but taking your Sov-GT into WAIST-DEEP Saltwater is in my personal opinion VERY FOOLISH/DANGEROUS!
Because, if a ROGUE WAVE CATCHES YOU, or you SLIP AND LOSE YOUR BALANCE and ACCIDENTALLY SUBMERGE that detector, you can kiss your New Sov-GT Warranty GOODBYE!! I would personally re-think that practice! HH, Les Robinson
