I just ordered a Bounty Hunter metal detector. I am looking forward to learning how to use it. I've already gathered a lot of tips and enthusiasm from reading this forum just an hour or so. Thanks y'all. Any advice for a beginner, should I be optimistic and bring a pouch or bag for any finds on my first field trip to the park once I'm ready to move on from the backyard?

Did you buy your metal detector from a local dealer? If not, then you need to learn how to correctly recover coins from the ground without damage to the landscape. What model Bounty Hunter did you purchase? That way we can help you better.

I ordered the detector from a dealer who is local to my parent's home, I visit them frequently. It's a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV.

It's good to buy from a local dealer. Perhaps the dealer can tell you about a local metal detecting club. By joining a club, you can get real hands on information. Until then there are some YouTube videos that might help. Depends on what you're looking for.

Thanks! I have the membership form for a local club printed out and on my desk. Good to know that's a smart move and I'm on the right track.

Howdy, and welcome from Texas, Harborchick14.

The Tracker IV is a good machine. You wil be ahead of the game by learning to detect using its tones.

Download the owner's manual and be reading it until your unit arrives.

When you get it, forget about the needle......wasted technology because it really means nothing. Just pay attention to the battery indicator on the readout. Otherwise study the owner's manual, learn to calibrate it, and get out there. Dig EVERYTHING you find until you start to learn the machine. Then you can be a little more discriminate on what you are finding.

And don't forget to come back here for SUPERIOR tips and techniques on using your Tracker IV! Best place on the web........for sure!!!!

And we like pictures!!!!!

HH y'all.

I tested my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV in the all metal mode since I thought I was in a harmless back lot on the campus of my Co-op. It was singing beeps high and low. After digging up some industrial looking finds, I asked around and it is believed the land was once part of a landfill. Switching to coinshooting mode and the soccer park/tot-lot ASAP. The reference librarian didn't have any maps from 1955 (pre-dating the Co-op), but she does have maps from 300 years ago. After some library research, the Tracker IV is going to get a real workout.

Looks like you're on the right track(no pun intended). It would be a good idea to use gloves if you don't already. If you don't want to dig big targets...lift the coil off the ground after getting a response. If you can still hear the target a foot or so off the ground...chances are it's pop/soda can sized or bigger.
