Boy scouts token (weird)

Hey Bunn:

That is one cool token; It's difficult to read the wordings on front and back; could you tell us the phrases from each side?

Thanks

Yeah im just getting used to the camerea thing it says "the original boy scouts shoes for boys"thats the horse side the other"manufactured by the excelsior shoe co. portsmouth O"

It's an Excelsior Shoe Company good luck token. They made shoes for boys, and boy scouts. They would include one of the good luck tokens in each pair of shoes.

This token has been attributed to Portsmouth Ohio (which is somewhat visible in your photo). The swastika that is depicted is not what the Nazi Party used but is an American Indian good luck symbol. It is used on a number of early 20th century good luck tokens, trade tokens, advertising tokens, etc. (for example, some tokens advertising Madame Hendren dolls, Red Goose shoes and Worcester salt had this symbol). After the Nazi Party "adopted" this symbol in the 1930s, it stopped appearing on US tokens. This token has appeal to various collectors - boy scouts, Ohio tokens, swastika tokens, shoe advertising, etc. I see it on eBay every so often. Neat find!

I just came across an almost identical metal. In place of "Boy Scouts" it has the name of a shoe store. I just purchased a digital camera off ebaY (FINALLY!) and will try to get a couple shots of it.

Small world.

I checked my drawers and I had TWO! One is for Excelsior Shoes for Boys (July 1910) and the other is Worchester Salt. Similar enough to be more than coincedence.
