Bounty Hunter Time Ranger & Cortes

I have been debating between these two detectors. I posted on the BH forum, and now I am posting here to see what Tesoro people have to say. The Ranger is less expensive, but I don't know a whole lot about either. I was going to buy one of these two as a second detector to an Explorer II. What do you think? Any words of wisdom?

I have used a BH, and they are in their element in the playground. The Time Ranger's may have a little more umph to them then the lower models, but if you are going to get outside of the playground to use it use it as a backup to your Explorer, I would go with the Cortes or even the Deleon if you want a VDI. Best of luck in your decision!!!

In November of 2003 I tested the upgrade for the Time Ranger before it was released. If the production models have performance equivalent to the proto they are serious detectors. Link to test below.

Thank you very much for the field test information. That was very helpful!

it would be a good backup or main hunting unit, but the resale or trade value aren't good on BH's. For some reason, a lot of people don't like them. I like BH's, they are good capable machines and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
But with that being said, I would go with the Cortes, great machine and is a killer on coins & jewelry and I think has better depth then the Time ranger and would be a bit lighter as well with a lifetime warranty.

but I still dont think I would buy another one. I spent 75 bucks on a lower end model, and it will only find coins that are within 3 inches of the surface. I'd hate spend more money to try out a similar performer.

I won a Tracker IV and it was pretty much like yours, about 3 inches on an inground coin. Also played with a QDII and a Discovery 3000, they had average depth, but the Time Ranger really surprised me. On higher conductive coins it had very good depth. I dug a wheatie at almost 9 inches, checked depth with tape since I was testing the detector. That's as deep as I've ever got a penny and I've had way too many of the "top end" detectors. No contest between the TR and LST for depth on pennies, dimes and quarters, the TR blew it away but the LST did have a pretty big edge on nickels and lower conductive targets like small foil. I don't know if the production models have the same performance as the proto but it did darn well. I'd choose the Golden
