The BH pinpointer is not a waste of money. I am on my second one in two years (wore thru the tip on the first one). I paid $29 each for them on sale so still haven't spent half of what a Garrett would cost.
If you have the extra money to spend the Garrett is a great pinpointer. However, the BH is really good and can be modified if desired.....see some of GoGoGopher's posts on the subject.

Here are some pics of the BH Pinpointer opened up and air testing...
As you can see, with a little injunewity...lol..You can bring the LED to the outside, and replace the buzzer with a bigger 6V one...
