Anybody here had any experience with the bounty hunter pinpointer? I have been using one of the cheap cen-tec units, modified with a vibrator motor, and have been pretty pleased with it. Today I received my Automax V-4 pinpointer from Kellyco, and this thing is huge! I'm thinking about trying to horse trade it for a BH unit, but was hoping to hear some good things about it before I get rid of the V-4.
I have used one of the BH pinpointers, I have used one of the automax V4's too. I would say that I do like the BH better. It's not much more on depth than any of the cheap one's out there but it's light. It fit's well in my pouch. I was able to take mine apart and mod it a little bit. The sound on it is not that loud when you have your Headphone's on. So believe it or not, inside of it, there is a LED that is part of the circuit, it is there so what I did was to take it off of the board and drill a small hole in there next to the on / off switch and glued it in place. So now I have a LED that light's up when it is going off. I also did get a little more depth on it with some mods, that's another story however. The V4 is just to big for me to use, I let my son take it over. He thinks that he stole it from me and it's his now, which it is, but I don't want him to know that's what I wanted him to do. I did get my BH for a deal, they were on sale at Cablea's I got it for $20.00 plus shipping. so I wasn't to upset when it turned out to be somewhat junk, it's not bad if you get a good deal. I hope that my rambling helped you out a little.
I have used the Bounty Hunter/Teknetics pinpointer for about a year and a half. I really like it. The battery life is good and it is durable. I am on my second one now due to the fact that I have hunted quite a few "pea gravel" filled playgrounds and wore thru the plastic tip by pushing it too hard into the gravel and into sandy rocky ground. Guess you could say that I abused it somewhat. I have been more careful with the second one and expect it to last much longer. The only other problem I had with the first one is the battery cap kept popping off. I don't know how much that had to with the fact that the cap can be put on wrong causing the two inner clips to not go into their grooves properly. once I figured that out I made sure to put it on the right way and didn't have as many problems with it popping off. The cap on the second one seems to fit tighter and doesn't pop off. And of course I make sure to put it on right.
Others on this forum have modified theirs to put a LED light where it can be seen when the pinpointer sounds off. If you wear heavy gloves sometimes you can't feel the vibration. If my memory serves me, GoGoGopher and perhaps TABAGO have posted pictures of their modifications in the past.
I only paid $29.00 for the 2nd one at Cabelas when they were on sale.
I also have a Centech from Harbor Freight. I keep it in the truck for a spare but don't use it much.....it does come in handy at night and in low light since it has the light.
I use the BH as well. I believe I got what I paid for. It works as I would expect a $25 pin pointer to work. I love the size. Fits well in a pouch or pocket.
I would not shy away from this unit if you are not looking to spend a lot.
Also my kids tend to get into my stuff. Doesn't seem to matter where I put it. So I guess if they find id and ruin it, I only paid $25 for it.
i liked the centech better. the bounty hunter needs a button to push to pinpoint. several times i would forget that it was on until i placed it in the trunk. never could get the automax to work very well.
I hate to say it, but I think I'm going to stick with the centech too. I have two of them now, one modified with a vibrator motor from an old cell phone, and I just really like them. From what I hear from other people, some people complain about them not being sensitive enough, but mine will go off about an inch away from a penny, which is plenty sensitive enough for me. I mainly use it for finding the dirty coin in the pile of dirt... Very handy for that. As far as the garrett propointer goes, I just can't justify $120 for a pinpointer at this time. My attitude may change in the future, but for now, my little $15 centech is going to get me by.
Check out my post on "Ball of Confusion" topic about my recent experience with pinpointing coins.. I mostly use a Pioneer 505 (or my Tracker IV - backup) with 8" coils & pinpointing helps me a LOT!! I found using the No Motion All-Metal mode works best by just resetting ground cancel as I center in. If I still need to I use a CHEAP ($15) Harbor Freight all metal probe that uses 1 9v battery, has a built in LED light that shines where probe is pointed, adjustable sensitivity, & beeps loudly! It is very light & fits a shirt pocket with just the probe sticking out though it does come with a soft case w/ beltloop. Although it's range is limited to about 2"... It works very well !! Best of all it works by a handy placed pushbutton & is ONLY on while you hold the button in.... For just $15 it is as good or better as others I have seen. I cannot imagine paying over $100 for one! I tell ya guys, I just got my new Garrett ProPointer, it's awesome.
Today I went out at lunch time for a quick hunt. I was able to pinpoint every coin with the propointer before I dug!
Seems it gets better depth in the ground then in the air and as you move closer to the target it beeps faster and faster so it is way faster than my V4.
I have used all three, and the BH is handy from a size stand point but if you take the V4 apart, there is a pot with a adjusting screw right in the middle of the circuit board and you can more depth with some adjustment. However the weak point is where the long shaft goes into the box, prone to crack there. If you can stand the cost the detector pro pistol probe beats them all, hands down! 6 inch pinpointing on coins before you dig is no problem! Ed in co.
Yea, I used to use the CenTech too. It worked for me as it does for everyone, but
when I finally got my Garrett ProPointer, the CenTech stayed in the car. In fact I just
gave my centech away to a guy that needs it. Wasn't dooing me ang good in the car trunk.
Once you use the roPointer you won't want to use anything else. SEE the Garrett forum and read
the Field Test.
Yeah, I am hearing really good things about the propointer. I think that after I settle on which detector I'm going to stick with, I'll have to break down and buy a propointer.
