We are first time detector users and need some help with our detector. I have read the manual and gave it a test ride but am confused with what the beeps and tones mean. Is there a DVD or video we could get? We also are going to N.C. to use the detector and pan for gold. Looking for a good campground that we could park our 26' pull behind for a week to have some fun. Please help.

Hi : and welcome I'm not familiar with your detector , but all work the same in general, the best thing to do is Get several different objects
quarter dime nickel a nail piece of foil pull top an maybe a cap an gold ring a copper penny a an a newer zinc penny wave the objects under the detector an learn the different sounds for the object's
an use different settings an then re do scan, you can reduce some of the junk signals it just takes a little time to learn
An when you make your first find You Will be Hooked LIKE THE REST OF US LOL

Have fun an good luck

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try the trial you suggested. Do you have any suggestions on where to go in North Carolina for good camping and detecting?

I'm from Missouri, Can't help you with the camping in North Carolina but sure some on here can Lots of nice people here,
Mite add you may want to pick up a pin pointer detector, to work with your land star I found that small objects an coins were hard to find some times the pin pointe is a grate helper

Also not from North Carolina, but I do own a Land Star (out of tune at the moment and up for sale cheap)...I will let this fly once again, though it has been posted in numerous other welcome posts...
Keep your Sensitivity at 9 o'clock to noon to start...if the detector beeps madly for no reason, turn it down a little till it stops...
Put your DISC/NOTCH knob all the way counter clockwise (down)....
Hunt in the Auto-Notch mode to start....This will net you the most finds with the least aggravation....
In this mode Iron (except for large pieces), and most pull tabs and bottle caps will not be detected (you will still get some)...
Keep your coil flat and level with the ground, and about 1-2 inches off the deck....Sweep your coil in a half-moon arc in front of you, and keep it away from your shoes if you have metal gromets in them...Do not swing the detector like a golf club or bat, or weed wacker (do not pendulum swing (lift the coil at the ends of your swing)).
Most gold nuggets are small and a good pin pointer may also be in order...
Most people think that you can just get a detector and go out and find gold by the pound...this is not so...gold is hard to detect even with the best detectors, experience will net you more finds as you get to learn your machine. Gold can be found, but do not believe that your gonna get rich on one trip to the gold fields...It is a LOT of work...
Nickels will produce a low tone, and your display should read nickel and the depth....
zinc pennies will produce a medium sound, as will any gold items...Gold falls in the same range and sounds the same as iron/foil to zinc depending on size...Gold is the hardest thing to detect, and if your planning on doing a LOT of gold detecting, I would suggest buying a dedicated gold detector, expensive, but worth it...
copper pennies and dimes produce a high tone, as well as all newer clad coins and older Silver coins, and Silver in general...
As stated earlier the best way to learn is to make a TEST GARDEN in your back yard...mark off a box, and till up the dirt...bury different objects at varying depths (not too close together), and see what your detector tells you when you run the coil over each object...
There are videos on YouTube.com that will show you the general ways to use a detector...It may not be the Land Star in the video, but it will help out...
Here is one video of how you would hunt for gold in ALL-Metal mode... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeCKCSOm-NU
Here is another (Do not do what this @## does and throw your junk back on the ground...Pick it up and carry it out)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBOuf6rCBlw&feature=related
Hope these help...

Thanks a bunch for the videos and help. I will take the Land Star out to the yard again and try the things you said. The thing that I did not understand about the different tones and beeps is on one mode you get tones like on the video and on another mode you get beeps. What is the difference? Thanks again, this forum and the folks that are on it are great...

Ahhhh!!!...

in ALL-METALS mode, you get only one tone...this tone will get louder and stronger as you near the center of your target....You would hunt in non trash areas with this mode, such as open farm fields, gold fields, etc....you may swing the coil in this mode, and when you hear a tone, you can check it by slowing your and tightening your swing over the object until you find it's center (loudest sound)...I am trying to remember, but I think you will NOT read depth in this mode...In all other modes, you will get the 3 tones...LOW for iron/foil, and nickels, medium for pull tabs, screw caps, and zinc, and GOLD...High for copper, dimes, quarters, halves, dollars, and large iron and SILVER...Your display is quite accurate, but different items can show as the same object, such as pull tabs and small gold rings, or zinc and large gold rings...lead and aluminum also show in the pull tab to zinc range...brass I believe shows as copper or quarter depending on it's size...All of this comes as second nature as you use your machine and get to speak her language...She is a sweat talker and you 2 will soon fall madly in love and make your better half most jealous, or happy, depending on your finds...lol
Once again, read your manual and do as it says inside or in your own yard until the controls become second nature...Especially learn how to correctly set up your ALL-Metals mode...Hit the ALL-Metals with the coil at waist height, then hit the Ground-Trac...lower the coil to the ground, and if it makes noise, hit the ALL-metals button again...if it is quiet, hit the Ground-Trac to lock this setting in...If it still makes noise, hit the Ground-Trac again till it is silent...Your all set...
Ground-Trac works only in ALL-Metal mode...In all other modes, the ground balance is factory pre-set...
(hence why mine never worked right in our mineralized soil here in CNY)

:beers: Man you are better than the video or the manual. I will try all the tips and thanks for the understanding of the tones and beep modes. The manual does not go into that. I wish they would have sent along a dvd tutorial. I bought a T/C Omega two years ago and it came with a great DVD. Took out all the guess work. A lady answered one of my posts on another forum from Bounty Hunter and said she would mail me a VHS tape but have not seen it yet. I think the Hurricane has shut us out of going to N.C. with fuel costs. Boy the price goes up fast but will not come down even it the refineries and rigs are fine. I will be very glad when we switch to alternative fuel and get out of this dependency on just oil. Thanks again for the tips...

Now that Americans have shown they WILL pay the prices, I do not see them falling unless congress puts a freeze on prices...

Glad I could help ya...

I guess we will all have to stop driving for awhile. That is not practical unless you are Amesh. We have started driving the wifes VW bug more than ever as much as I hate to. I look like an elephant driving a tricycle in it but it gets better fuel economy than my 2001 Ford diesel Excursion 4X4. Thanks for all the help....
