Bounty Hunter IV random signal

I have a random noise (beep) problem with this unit. I have had the unit for about 3/4 of a year and worked fine when I last used it in May. I took it on a trip, and when I tried it out, I kept getting random beeps when the toggle was set in the middle position (all metal) no matter what the sensitivity setting was. It seemed to work fairly well on the coil setting and on the tone setting. On the all metal setting, I could hold the coil up in the air and shake it in an open field and still got all kinds of random beeps. I tried using a rechargeable battery and the results were the same. Could this just be due to using weak or non-alkaline type batteries? Should I buy some new batteries (even though the red light low-battery indicator did not light and I used newly recharged rechargeable batteries)?

First be sure there is no play in the coil cord running up from the coil to the control box. Thia will generate random noise slapping against the stem or just moving around. Also check that the coil plug is seated correctly, not tilted or bent pins.

A loose connection did not seem to be the problem as it works fine on Disc setting. Any other suggestions welcome.
