bounty hunter 4" coil

cory in fla

New member
I'm thinking of picking one up does any one use the small 4' coil on their bounty hunter how well does it work and does it make a bigger deference then the standard 8" coil that comes with the bounty hunters ?

It will also pick up things between all the trash better than a large coil. have to work is slow in the trash, doesn't cover much ground.

Well i sent for a bounty hunter gold 4" coil today i got for 27 bucks so i should get it around wed id would say.their is a little park near me i have been to that has a quit a bit of junk in it. like lots of pull tabs and small aluminum pieces like from the tops of yogurt tops i noticed, that kind of junk so hopefully the smaller coil will do good their. i have found a lot of Penny's and a few dimes and nickels among all the junk so theirs no telling what you'll dig up there!!

to me the 4'' is the way to go.i keep it on most of the time.its a bit harder to overlap your strokes when scanning but it worth it.you can get close to playground equipment without interference like the stock coil gives you.i find alot of coins with it .its a good choice!

An awfully stupid remark : the 4" coil will do a great job in trashy area providing that you dial some disc in. Ideally, auto notch.

Happy hunting.

Nick.

I use the 4" coil quite a bit around Tot Lots, on trashy beaches, and in the wods where it can get hard to swing the 8 or 10 inch coil between saplings and brush...it will only go to about 6 inches on dime size objects, but the target separation and ease of use are well worth the depth lost. Most stuff is between 4-6 inches up here in NY anyways that I have found...Very few items below 8 inches (unless they were heavier than coins).

Happy Hunting,

I suppose it has it's place in the arsenal, I just prefer not to use it because of it's lack of depth. I have tried it around the parks to get closer to the metal swings etc I've tried it on the goldfield here in OZ but it would'nt pick up a gram nugget any deeper than two inches. I don't hunt grassed areas in the parks only the chip bark or sand playgrounds.:ausflag:

I just recieved my 4" coil with my new TimeRanger hope it works as good as it supposed to!!!!!!.....HappyHunting!

Nugget...just wondering if you also get a LOT of false signals with the 4" coil??? If so, you have a bad coil...
I had to take my first one back to Rat-Shark (Radio Shack) and replace it....Seems that when something that small is wound with magnet wire, it is easier to get breaks in the wire, or even shorts...a break is obvious...no detection...a short gives erratic operation...
I have never had a real big loss in depth about an inch or 2 is all...
Just takes 2-3 times longer to cover the same area as the 8" coil...

Happy Hunting

Hi BH-landstar, I don't seem to get any erratic behavour with it, and It runs smooth on the goldfield, just the lack of depth. Maybe I have to put some more time in with it, I'll do some testing out in my back yard tomorrow and tell you how deep I can pick up a quarter, I find the quarters and other US coins on the beaches at Surfers Paradise, I'll also try a US one cent. Could you tell me what depth you can get on these coins in the sand? I will also do some bench testing with it using those same 2 coins. I've had to send an 8" coil back because of falsing and I also wore a10" out as well, the 8" was under warranty but not the 10" Thanks for the post and info, much appreciated. God bless, Nugget.:ausflag:

Would love to tell you how deep I can go in sand, but I have not used it on a beach in a while, and with winter up here, It is going to be a while yet...in dirt, I have found dimes at 4-6" even with the 8" coil, I have not found a coin below 6". I found a piece of lead weight from a car tire at 10" with the 4" coil...that was a stunner, but maybe because the lead is denser???

BH-LandStar

:blowup:BH, I can only pick up US 1 cent at 4" air test, with the coil on the ground and moving the target above it, this is a more realistic test as the coil has to compensate for the ground mineralisation and still detect the target. The only time I will probably use it is in the creeks on the gold fields, for the crevices etc, or thick bush. I hate digging the grassed areas of parkland's, although I might try again around the metal structures in the tot lots. HH regards Robert.:ausflag::)

someone just got me a VLP bounty for christmas--have just got started in this--is this a decent beginners detecter--looking foward to it-Bob

I can detect a dime at 6 inches with the 4" coil, and at 8 inches with the 8" coil in sand. Quarters I can detect at 8" with the 4" and almost a foot with the 8" coil..of course, this is with planted coins.

HH,

i just noticed nugget doesnt hunt in grass. is that just with the 4" coil, or as a rule with any coil? and why?
