Bounty Hunte Land Star

Good morning all!

I have a quick question. I main MD machine is a Bounty Hunter Land Star. It is just over 5 years old (by like 2 months) and is therefore probably out of warranty. Unfortunately, for the first 5 years I owned it, I didn't use it hardly at all because of having two small children and not having enough time. The kids are getting older and I am getting out more. I know I probably don't know my machine as well as I should, but I seem to get an awfully lot of ghost signals....is this a common thing with these machines? Or is there something not set right and it is a product of operator error?

Well, it is the month of Halloween.

BTW: I think that having and using a MD is much like having a child, you have to know when to pay attention to the noise. If you are getting strong consistent signals when you swing from all directions and the target is indicated to be 5" or less and you dig and there is nothing there, then I would say the machine is defective.

It's not so much when I dig there is nothing there....it's more a matter of when I am swinging it seems to beep an awful lot and then I can't replicate it when I try to go back over the spot....

Your machine is constantly trying to balance itself. The mineral content and moisture content of the surrounding soil is constantly being measured and then anomalies in that background environment are what the MD is looking for. If you are swinging too fast, the machine may get confused and misinterpret a slight variation in the soil as a target. It is also so VERY important to keep the coil parallel to the surface of the soil and at a constant distance above the soil. Variations in these two factors can also be misinterpreted as targets.

Turn the sensitivity down and make sure the coil wire is wrapped tight. It should not false consistantly. Try different areas, some areas it is possible for this to happen no matter what settings.

Contrary to the Manuals, the Bounty Hunter lineup CANNOT run at 3 o'clock position on the SENS knob most of the time (unless you have perfect soil conditions)...I find that leaving the SENS at or below the noon position eliminates most of the falsing. Very few places in my area where I can turn the SENS up above 1 o'clock without it driving me nutzo.
If you turn your sens to 9 o'clock position and your still getting a lot of false signals, your coil is bad, or your detector is out of tune or shot...
Give First Texas a call...They will often re-tune a machine for the cost of shipping the detector to them (just the box and coils. No rods). This cost me about $10.00 the last time I did it, and my machine is older than yours (6 yrs). I just wanted a tune up, and they replaced the DISC potentiometer and the whole faceplate...machine looks and feels brand new...:detecting: :yo:

HH,

I can vouch for sending it in to First Texas I will be sending mine in soon, unlike your issue mine is that i can turn the sens up all the way with no falseing, and the depth just isn't getting it. I can only get about 4" down and no more than that on my 505. SO im sure when i get it back i will be one deep seeking 505 carrying dude.

Well,, if you have been running it at 3. You should see a big difference a little lower. You do want it as high as possible without falsing. Its Different every day and different areas. Dry and wet changes its limit too.

The higher it is set the more depth you will get out of it.

Good Luck

Mncricket,a lot of ghost signals can come from very bad ground conditions or losing your target with bad pinpointing.I had a lot more ghost targets before I started to use a handheld pinpointer. When I used CZs ground balancing helped you hunt with a higher sensitivity.I would try a couple different hunting locations and see if there is an improvement on another site.If you do have very little actual hunting time with this detector it may just learning the quirks of this detector. HH Ron

Also, if it has been sitting for a while, the plug contacts may be slightly corroded...plug the coil in, then remove it...repeat 10 times...spray the plugs with contact cleaner and them let it dry thouroughly...

HH,
