Depth depends a lot on the soil type/natural minerals found in the area you hunt. Also ground moisture is a factor too, damp ground is favorable to bone dry dirt. Turn the sensitivity clockwise to about 4 o'clock and the discrimination counter clockwise to about 9 o'clock. Set the switch to "tone". If the detector chatters or beeps constantly turn the sensitivity counterclockwise until it stops. Small rusty nails and paperclips can be a nuisance too, if so, turn the discrimination clockwise to around 10 o'clock to eliminate those, any higher and you run the chance of not finding small gold earrings and charms. These settings work well for me in the black dirt of Illinois and also in sand tot lots and playgrounds covered in tire grind. I dig plenty of clad coins, pull tabs, costume jewelry and such anywhere from 6" deep to just under the grass roots. Most targets deeper than 6" have been large iron pcs. and beer cans, but I dig every good target that I can pinpoint just in case I hit a cache or or gold bar! I could go on for hours about what to do or not to do but I suggest that you do a search on this site using "Tracker IV" and read the past posts, there are a lot. This is a popular machine and loves to find coins. Good Luck to you and post some pics of your finds whatever they are.
