Just got back from a short hunt and encountered a new detectorist that got his first machine for Christmas. He was refilling his holes, just not taking care with how. He was in a grass area and just pushing the dirt back in when he was done. Luckily he was appreciative of learning the correct way so I showed him how to cut a flap, use a towel for the dirt, and then make it look like he never dug there. He was getting better but being new, he needed practice so I told him to consider practicing at home so we don't get banned in our parks. Also showed him how much easier a pinpointer makes finding coins in the plug. I'm sure there are a lot more occurrences of this since Christmas so keep your eye out and try to help a newcomer learn the correct technique for all of us.

yup. Glad he was open to learning. A catch-mat helps. And you've got to stomp the holes down flat as you can, and then ruffle up the surface with your fingers to disperse any last crumbs, and to fluff up the grass.

Nothing looks worse that someone who just puts the plug back in up-side-up, yet does nothing else.

I'd have a very hard time explaining the other diggers around here on how to cover up their holes...
Wild boars just don't like conversations... :yikes:
I'll take a few photos tomorrow on what they do to fields.
I just hope they stay far away from me.

DirtAngler - good on ya.
Tom_in_Ca - I respectfully disagree - not putting anything back is worse.
