I started lurking on another forum a couple of weeks ago. I read a lot of threads, advertisements, and watched a lot of youtube trying to learn something about this metal detecting stuff. Mostly trying to figure out what detectors to buy and if we would even like the hobby.
I thought I had narrowed it down to an F2 or an Ace 350 for myself and I was trying to figure out something for the wife to use, and someone recommended a Compadre. I started reading up on it and the other Tesoro models. I really liked the Compadre but was concerned about the 5.75" coil and being able to cover a lot of ground. Seemed like it was more of a specialty machine for most users or a back-up unit.

I finally decided that I could buy a couple of "better" used machines for what I was thinking of paying for entry level new ones. Also if we decide we don't enjoy it, I can always sell them and get most of my investment back.

I got a slightly used Silver Umax, and an almost new Tejon for a little over half price of each model. I plan on letting the wife use the Umax as it's pretty much turn on and go. I'm a little worried about the Tejon and being able to calibrate everything. I've seen very little info on the Tejon. Watched 53Silver's video on ground balancing the Vaquero (I think that's the right model). Finally after reading some on Monte's post, Tabdog's post, and Digger27 post, and a thousand others, and also watching the video about 5 times I could tell the difference in the sound as the coil was being pumped up and down. I've also read where some people say the sound gets "louder" as it is going down if too positive. To me it also sounds like it gets slightly higher in pitch. I correlate it to when you hear a train whistle, when it's coming toward you it goes up in frequency, and when it is going away it goes down in frequency.

Anyway SkiWhiz recommended this site when he heard I had two Tesoro's. Glad that he did.

Welcome aboard customcutter, the members here on the forum are just like the the people @ Tesoro and the detectors they make, they're........ great!!!

Welcome to the addiction. The one thing to remember is that most things worthwhile will have a learning curve. And you will get plenty of help here. Unlike some things, this is a hobby and not a way to make a living. So you'
ll see no competition or people with hidden agendas that don't dare share secrets in case you make more money then they do. The rewards are in the pleasure of seeing what we unearth at each outing. And no two days are the same. That's what keeps it fresh.

I did a lot of reading myself before I jumped in. Tesoro detectors are ever bit as good as people say they are and customer service is second to none.

Welcome aboard!

Forgot to mention that I am proud to say that I am back to being part of the family, I have a Tesoro Cibola on its way :tesoro::thumbup:.

About time :clapping:

Welcome to the Dark side!

Thanks guys looks like a great site. I've already watched a few more video's here. Plus reading a lot more threads on different things is giving me more knowledge than just trying everything on my own. I don't believe in re-inventing the wheel. If somebody does something else that works use that and try to improve from there. No need to go back to square one.

God bless,
CC

Welcome CustomCutter - I just joined the forum as well. I'd have been doing forums earlier, but when I first got into the hobby, the arc had just landed and websites weren't available!!

You can't go wrong with Tesora. . .used or otherwise. Detecting for over 30 years now (yes, there were 2 of those on the arc as well!!), I've settled on using their machines almost exclusively. .. my favorite, a 1987 vintage Toltec 100. Regardless of the model or models you have or eventually settle on, proficiency comes with familiarity. . . .the more you do, the better you get, and using one long enough, it soon becomes second nature.

Congrats and have a ball. And before you believe that all that is left in the ground is new coins, bottlecaps, and pull tabs, we dug a 1783 French ECU just last week on a 2 acre commercial lot off a main road in SW Virginia. That's the kind of thing that has antsy to get back out the next day. ...

Best, and enjoy -

RicS
