Bought an SE. Have a few questions

PJ

Member
Used to detect in the 70's and got away from it for over 30 years. I got back into it last year (ace 250) and finally bought a SE 2 weeks ago. I have been doing ok. 18 wheats, 5 merc's (1916s), 3 silver quarters and 1 silver dime. My question of you guys are many. What do you mean when you say low and slow? I understand the slow but whats low. You guys mention you go by sound. I bought the Sunray Gold but I do not hear any difference from silver to clad. Am I deaf or am I missing something. The deepest coin that I have found was the 1916 merc at 6-7 inches. 1 of the areas that I have been hunting is a very rich guys property from the 1850's. I would have thought I would have found an IH or a barber. Either I am in the wrong setting or I don't know what they sound like if I did detect them. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. PJ

Low and Slow means just that. For maximum depth you want the coil as close to the ground as possable. When it comes to the sound of silver and clad, you will notice that you hear the high pitch and the cursor is in the top right corner, but with silver that tone is slightly higher and the cursor is about half off the screen. Take a silver Quarter and a Clad Quarter and test them separately. You will here and see a difference.

PJ-----Go slow-keep that coil low (to the ground)-don't cup that coil upward on those swings (at the end of the swing). Listen intently (if you want the deep targets the Explorer can provide). You got an excellent set of headphones in those Sunray Golds. Go by sound and don't get all hung up on thinking---is that target clad or silver?? (especially with only 2 weeks behind the SE)--think about depth. I know not ALL good, old targets are deep--but I'm talking about those deep, difficult targets. Forget those "learned" programs and open that thing up as much as you can stand it (again, thats if you want the targets that other detectors walk right over the top of). It takes time to learn this "beast"----A lot of the other things WILL come to you as you use & learn the machine, and you certainly DO have THE RIGHT machine. I think it sounds like you are off and running with a bang, finding the coins you listed with only 2 weeks on the SE. The guys on this forum will help you with settings if you ask them. Take care, Del

This is just my opinion.....if you set up your detector....first in your house air testing with diff. coins, penny, dime, quarter and silver quarter and silver dime and silver ring....watch where they all hit on smart screen......then set limits to 10, variability to 8 and try 9 then 10 and see which you like better with each coin.....and then set threshold tone to the threshold tone hum you like and then try all coins again and then see if by changing the th.tone you get a better seperation from quarter, dime from silver quarter, silver dime....can you hear the difference?.....Granted when coins are in the ground I hear a better difference between silver and clad.......your hearing ability is the key to your settings...thats why you have to spend a few hours at home setting up your SE and get the best seperation of coins for your ears......not mine, not Bills, not Bobs...etc.....Yours!....I don't care for Your headphones cause they do not make the sounds I like...I prefer gray ghoasts....see what I mean.....once you set up your Limits, threshold tone, and variability you are done with those 3 settings.....and leave them alone and you will get to know your machine and tones.......the rest of the settings will vary from site to site but the 3 main settings should stay the same...but then there is Ferrous sounds and conductivity sounds.....I prefer Ferrous sounds, cause iron should not sound high like good coins and silver...JMO.....once you make up your mind leave it that way...get use to the same tones and then the rest is variable to diff. sites....(sensitivity,auto or manual how high or low sens.,....Gain,threshold volume(ambiant noise level may change this),contrast (sunlight will make you change this),volume....if you are talking SE there are a few more bells and whisltes than my xs so I can not help you on those.....I forgot about sounds.....I use normal.....like I said I do not own an SE so the rest is up to you.......Good luck and never give up on this machine...it is awsome! :minelab: :detecting:
