Bottomless Bucket

Was doing some web searching today and came across a website that gave a really cool tip on how to keep sand out of an excavation when looking for a target especially near the water line.

The idea was to cut out the bottom of a plastic 5 gallon bucket and when finding a target, push the bucket into the sand turning it back and forth sinking it into the sand. The bucket without the bottom will shore up the sides of the hole and prevent sand from filling in.

I tried it at a local park that had a sand pit for volley ball and it works like a charm. The only bad thing is dragging that bucket around.

Would need to check and make sure your digger fits in the bucket. Even my smaller beach scoop won't allow digging inside a 5 gallon bucket.
Nice thought though.

nice idea. Maybe something a little bigger, maybe a 55G plastic drum. I see them all the time at the textile mill I clean.

A large beach scoop will dig more sand out than a 5 gallon bucket would hold back. It would take 3 or 4 times as much time to plant a bucket in the sand, get down on your knees and dig inside of a 1 foot circle (the bottom of the bucket) with a small digging tool than it would for large scoop to take a big bite out of the sand. A bucket would be very time consuming.

In the wet sand I use a small headed, long handle shovel. I can dig faster with the small shovel than I can with my large scoop as the scoop is to heavy when filled with wet sand and takes to long to get the sand out of the scoop. However I am having a hard time finding those small headed, long handle shovels anymore. Lowe's and Home Depot no longer carry them. The last one I had to order from Tru-Temp online.
